Pro Football Weekly is counting down the picks of the last ten years at each spot in the first round.

Below are the links to the pick histories and any quotes pertaining to the Panthers.

Number 32

2003: Raiders select Colorado DE Tyler Brayton

Using a pick they received as compensation when Jon Gruden left for Tampa, the Raiders found a servicable D-lineman in Brayton. He started all 16 games his rookie season and made 175 tackles in Oakland before joining the Panthers in '08.

Notable - 2003: Raiders select Nnamdi Asomugha

Number 30

Notable - 2001: Colts select Reggie Wayne

Notable - 2004: Falcons select Michael Jenkins

Number 28

2004: Panthers select Ohio State CB Chris Gamble

Gamble has been one of the Panthers' top defensive backs for the past seven seasons. He has 24 interceptions in his career, but was held without a pick in 11 games last season after falling out of favor with former head coach John Fox.

FYI: This was a trade up from Number 31. With that pick, the 49ers took WR Rashaun Woods, who was supposed to be the next Jerry Rice but wound up a colossal bust.

2006: Panthers select Memphis RB DeAngelo Williams

It took him a few years to get going, but Williams developed into one of the league's best in '08. After a pair of seasons of 1,000-plus yards, Williams missed time with a foot injury last year and is currently a free agent.

Notable - 2009: Packers select Clay Matthews

Number 25

2007: Panthers select Miami (Fla.) LB Jon Beason

Beason bounced around at different linebacker positions last season, but it was evident that middle linebacker suits him best. Beason has had 120-plus tackles every season of his career and is among the league's elite at his position.

Notable - 2009: Vikings select Percy Harvin

Notable - 2006: Patriots select Laurence Maroney. 2004: Patriots select Vince Wilfork, 2005 - Jaguars select Matt Jones

FYI: The Patriots actually had this spot three times in the decade. The 2006 pick was a trade up specifically aimed at getting ahead of the Panthers who were set to take Maroney. Instead, the Panthers ended up with DeAngelo Williams (joke's on you, chowderheads) :lol:

Notable - 2008: Buccaneers select Aqib Talib

2008: Panthers select Pittsburgh OT Jeff Otah

A knee injury kept Otah off the field for the entire '10 season. He has proven to be an effective run blocker at right tackle but health will be a big factor moving forward.

Notable - 2008: Ravens select Joe Flacco, 2010: Steelers select Maurkice Pouncey

Notable - 2001: Seahawks select Steve Hutchinson, 2009: Buccaneers select Josh Freeman

Notable - 2003: Steelers select Troy Polamalu

Number 15

2001: Redskins select Clemson WR Rod Gardner

Gardner looked promising his first two seasons in the league, recording his lone season with 1,000-plus receiving yards in '02. But he steadily declined following that campaign and hasn't played since '06.

FYI: We traded a 7th rounder for him only to eventually find out he wasn't smart enough to grasp the playbook.

Number 14

2005: Panthers select Georgia DB Thomas Davis

Davis didn't play at all in '10 while recovering from a torn ACL, but he was developing into an active, solid weak-side linebacker before his injury issues began. In 2008, which is the last time he played a full 16-game season, Davis recorded 113 tackles and 3½ sacks.

2002: Giants select Miami (Fla.) TE Jeremy Shockey

Shockey has struggled to stay healthy throughout his career, but he has made four Pro Bowls and was one of the league's elite tight ends earlier in his career. He recently signed with the Panthers after being cut by the Saints.

FYI: With Shockey and Davis on board, we'd have two #14 picks from the decade, and could have three if the Panthers were to pick up now former Chicago Bear Tommie Harris (2004)

Notable - 2007: Jets select Darrelle Revis

Number 13

2008: Panthers select Oregon RB Jonathan Stewart

Stewart has spent the majority of his career splitting time with fellow RB DeAngelo Williams. The tandem has been effective. Stewart's best year came in ’09, when he gained 5.1 yards per carry, ran for 1,133 yards and scored 10 touchdowns.

Number 12

2001: Rams select Miami (Fla.) DT Damione Lewis

Lewis has never recorded more than 43 tackles in a season, but he has done enough to stick around the league for 10 NFL seasons. He has played for the Rams, Panthers and Texans in his career, compiling 23½ sacks.

Number 11

2001: Panthers select Miami (Fla.) OLB Dan Morgan

Morgan was productive when healthy during his tenure with the Panthers from 2001-07, but was never able to put together a complete season because of injuries. He was a big factor in Carolina's playoff run in '03, recording 18 tackles in the Panthers' Super Bowl loss to the Patriots.

Notable - 2002: Colts select Dwight Freeney, 2004: Steelers select Ben Roethlisberger

Today's is up.

Looking at the history, if we don't win the Super Bowl (highly unlikely) I wouldn't mind performing well enough to get pick #24.

There hasn't been a bust at that spot since 2002. Just the opposite in fact. It looks like a gold mine of talent.

With runs on certain positions, there is always talent falling back. Making those later picks easier.

Top ten picks are over rated, even at the qb position. So much boom or bust.

Sitting at 24, there is bound to be several players that were evaluated as higher picks. That is why teams always have to evaluate all players, not just the ones they think may be there.

So far, the Panthers have had four picks in the lower end of the round.

More to come as we get to the mid-level and higher picks, but mildly comforting to know that we weren't always in the top ten.

that's the perfect word "mild". Not too good, not too bad. Good enough to not be a total joke but not good enough to keep your job.

I decided to go ahead and chart the history just to see what we can expect.

We will be at...

#19 (2008)

#14 (2005)

#13 (2008)

#11 (2001)

#8 (2003)

#2 (2002)

Choice #17 in 2010 was technically ours, but we traded it away to move up and get Everette Brown.

All tolled, five in the top half of the round and five in the bottom.

      Start with Bryce, this is like his rookie year. The 1st 2 games proved her was wired wrong and it looks like (we hope) he needed a time out to reset and be the player that was drafted. He's still about a year or more away from being a top 15 QB, if the Panther give him another playmaker or 2 (a top WR and a decent TE) and maintain that line. Canales deserves credit as playing that card correctly to motivate (or refocus) his QB for one last shot to decide his and the Panthers immediate future. As a Panther fans we should hope he keeps improving as we invested so much to get him. CJ Stroud will never have a season like he had, even if he stays a top 10 QB. He's got great character so I'm rooting for Bryce to continue on his positive journey. Canales is playing the week to week thing with bryce perfectly. Nothings guaranteed, earn it weekly which builds consistency and consistency is greatness.  Keep the O-line. They've got to extend Brady C, along with Mayes that have a real good 7. Great job Morgan starting with the big guys upfront.  I really hope they draft a DE or OLB in the 1st round. Getting Brown back with A Robinson and what DJ has shown that we can have a decent D-line. Need a CB in the early rounds/ or a time FA to go with Horn.  The future as to next year being good enough to challenge for the division is within reach. Just show progress (win or lose) every week. Kudos to Dan Morgan. Plays GM like a LB. Tackle the problem and move on, don't just hope it works out. Find guys with your playing mentality and work closely with your HC to share a vision. Teamwork starts at the top and flows down.

      Since we play the Panthers today and tmrw, we will have one gigantic double thread for both games. Today’s game is at 3pm and tmrw is 7pm.    After beating the Rangers and sending the those yankee bastards back to Cary, we get the Champs in the house.  Clean up the defense, no more lazy clears, and score baby score.  LFG CANES!
