Doesn't matter who at #1, Moore/Clausen/Vet will start

Recommended Posts

Matt Moore isn't currently a Panther.

Right now only Clausen, Pike and Null are. A rookie could easily come in and be a better option than those guys.

So a vet coming in would be the ideal starter but there are no guarantees. The vet could go down week 4 and the rookie could be called upon.

Best case scenario for the Panthers is Clausen starting and playing well, while Newton sits and learns the NFL game. In the off season, Clausen will demand at least a second in trade value, maybe more.

If we take Newton and he has to start by midseason, it probably means we aren't doing well.

if you draft Cam you wouldn't start Clausen. Wouldn't make sense. You would want a vet for Cam and for that vet to show him the ropes and running the offense.

Having a garbage young 2nd year QB as your starter isn't what you want when you draft someone like Cam #1 overall.

well if we resign d-will, teach him how to throw, and then put him under center WITH stew, and with armanti in the FB position and let shockey and smith poo talk the deffense....................green will be WIDE OPEN!

You don't seem to get the concept of "best case", do you?

Moore's been tendered. He'll at least get a shot.

not when the "best case" isn't a realistic possiblity. I mean, best case would be for Tony Pike to tear it up and start and we trade a 6th rounder for a 2nd the following year....but Tony starting this season with Cam drafted #1 overall isnt' realistic.

well, if Moore got a shot he would beat out Jimmy.

So Cam is drafted, Moore, and who? Carolina would still need a vet for a Cam type project....and Moore ain't that vet presense. So if Moore gets a shot that would mean Jimmy is practice squad/cut/traded and that ain't gonna happen for Moore imo(even thought I wish it would)

Some people might not understand this. If we do draft a QB he will need to sit for a year. In that case, Moore/Clausen/Vet will be starting. If we don't draft a QB then Moore/Clausen/Vet will be starting. So ether way, Moore/Clausen/Vet will more than likely start. If the coaching staff feels the need to throw a unprepared rookie QB into the fire (like last season) then we will just see another repeat of last season (Clausen 2.0). It might be just me, but drafting a rookie QB (especially in this draft class) and expecting him to start (even after a few games) is like asking us to David Carr our QB.

I'm all for a franchise QB, hell I've wanted one for years now, but there is no franchise QB's in this draft AT ALL. Next years draft will have 3 Top 10 QB's (all franchise material: Luck,Barkley,Jones). Even some mid-late first rounders, all better than what we have to pick from this season.

The top 10 QB's being discussed in this years draft class would be drafted late 1st - mid 2nd round next season.

So as painful as it is, Rivera/Hurney, please just wait one more season.

I guess I am one of those people that you claim just don't understand the obvious truths.

My position is you look for opportunities to get a rookie QB some touches. Maybe a 3rd down play, maybe one series a game. Let them adjust to the speed of the game and reading defenses.

When it becomes obvious they are your best chance to win, you begin to start them.

Neither you nor anyone else can know for sure how long a rookie has to sit until we see them in live action.

I agree the QB situation will be a Vet/Clausen/Rookie with the rookie and Clausen sitting.

If so, I say we treat it similar to what Denver did with The Golden Calf of Bristol last year and see/test how he fits with the squad towards the year's end. If we get a rookie QB like Gabbert or Newton, we are in a very similar situation to Denver, except they're the ones John Fox gets to fugup with this time. :)

So, If Clausen doesn't seem to gel as a backup next year with minimal interest to really step up, we have ourselves our own Brady Quinn/ Matt Leinart with a promising rookie in either Gabbert or Newton & an older vet like Bulger or Volek.
