A few interesting FA choices at DT...

Clifton Ryan, DT, 6'3 310lbs, 27 years old

Impending free agent DT Clifton Ryan's migraine issues have subsided, and he's been working out at Michigan State.

Ryan underwent a battery of tests, including a visit with a concussion expert, in an attempt to fix migraine issues that limited him to just one game in 2010. His health will be a question mark going into next season. The Rams have given mixed signals on bringing him back

Had trouble with migranes last season which took him out the whole year but its recently been reported his issues have subsided and is now working out at Michigan State. Would be a good run stuffer and nice compliment to the UT. Could also fill in at NT when we move into a 3-4 look.

Amobi Okoye, DT, 6'2 315lbs, 23 years old (soon to be 24)

The Houston Chronicle's John McClain does not believe Amobi Okoye will be on the Texans' 2011 roster.

The Texans are expected to make Okoye available for trade. Trouble is, he's shown no pass-rush ability, is due a $2.95 million salary in the final year of his contract, and the rest of the NFL is well aware Okoye doesn't fit Houston's new 3-4 defense. They can't expect more than a late-round pick in return.

Just like Ryan, Okoye could be had at a very decent price. He's made every start for the Texans since 2007 so he is reliable. And also like Ryan, would be a great run stuffer that could demand double teams and could also fill in at NT when we go into 3-4 mode. He also made the most tackles of his career last season and 2nd most sacks.

One more interesting FA is Tommie Harris.

Several scouts believe free agent DT Tommie Harris no longer has the same lower-body strength that he boasted early in his career.

Harris still maintains "some of the quickness," but multiple knee injuries as well as a serious hamstring tear have sapped his power. The 28-year-old may have to settle for an incentive-laden, one-year deal on the open market. Mar 20, 3:08 PM

He's had some health issues and isn't the player that he once was. But if he could stay healthy, even just a fraction of the player he used to be would help us out a lot. He would have to come in on a very cheap one year deal though.

The only concern I have with picking up FA DT with them tabbed as a starter is that DT are a lot like RB in the NFL lately. Teams get the most out of DT early in their careers and then they fall off quickly after about age 28-30. Just look at Tommie Harris. Dude was the best DT just four seasons ago. Now he's cut and has injury concerns. Same thing with Kris Jenkins and to some degree Albert Haynesworth (his isn't injury related though).

I know a lot of people have already written Landri off as just a backup but I think paired with the right partner inside he could be a quality starter for at least a season or two. So picking up two DT might not be a have to just a like to.

I do like Okoye. He's still young enough he might not yet hit his stride yet. Pair Okoye and Landri for this year and look at a DT in the 1st or 2nd next year and you don't have to even look at a DT in this year's draft.

Just some random thoughts...
