After Newton, there's little consensus on QB draft class

This year's crop of draft-eligible quarterbacks is a flawed, but intriguing one. So let's start here, with what a very veteran NFC personnel executive told me on Wednesday night: "I'd be shocked if Cam isn't the first pick."

In case you've lived under a rock the last seven months, the "Cam" in question is Auburn quarterback Cam Newton, and momentum seems to be building in the direction he's the top overall pick by the Panthers. An AFC personnel man told me that of the top quarterbacks, Newton is the one he has a hard time seeing sliding in the draft.

"Would I be shocked if Cam slipped out of the Top 10?" he said. "I would be absolutely shocked."

There's so much consensus in who is the #1 quarterback, half the articles disagree...

All of these guys have some huge question marks, Newton included... and that's precisely why we shouldn't go QB in this draft.

Nuh ugh!!!!

That is my new argument. :D

Is this team guaranteed a top 3 draft pick net year, due to the lockout?

I've never understood the reasoning to drafting elsewhere this year, and magically picking up Luck the next.

Someone explain this to me.

You don't need to draft in the top 3 to get a good quarterback out of the first round.

That's all well and good, but what's guaranteeing that this team is going to be in a drafting position to grab one of these good QB's?

Is it due to the lockout, that the draft position stays the same? Or what?

No. It's because teams have already shown you can draft a quarterback in the mid first round and have them end up doing fine, especially when you have a great defense to back them up. We'd have a great defense if we drafted D #1 overall this year. A DT would fill our biggest hole on that side of the ball and if the pick worked out, instantly transform our defense to the elite level. We're already good. Let's take it one step further.

Plus, you don't need to draft a QB #1 overall, or top 3, to get a great starter. A lot of people say Newton is the next Freeman or Big Ben... Okay, but look at where Freeman was drafted, Flacco, Big Ben, Drew Brees (IMO he might as well be considered late first round, lol), Aaron Rodgers. Sure, we may not be in a Green Bay situation, but the fact remains they found one of the best QBs in the NFL and he sure wasn't taken early.

If we go defense this year, we'll be competitive pretty damn quick assuming injuries don't ravage us again. So let's improve now, and go about building a solid foundation, we can then draft a prospect in the future and have them come into an established system and learn from a veteran and take over in time.

This team won't be competitive with Clausen/Moore/whoever at QB. We might not even be with Newton either but at least you have something to build around. We have a new coaching staff coming in, it's a perfect time to draft a rookie QB.

Honestly, in my opinion only Newton will become a starting and successful QB in the NFL and the only other guy that could possibly even become close to being a starter in the NFL is Blaine Gabbert and here is why I don't see that happening.

Blaine Gabbert- Unproven and really did not impress anyone with his on-field play but more of his performances at the Mizzou Pro Day and his private workouts. He just can't get it done on the field. In games that Mizzou lost, Gabbert was just absolutely horrible. In his three losses, he was a combined 71 for 129. With a Touchdown to Interception ratio of 2 to 3. An average rating of 95.67 and an average completion percentage of 51.6. Even in some of his best games he is missing receivers left and right and it doesn't help that he had to rely on his arm at Mizzou for over 3/4ths of the game as he averaged 37 passing attemts per game. In the NFL teams tend to use the ground game more than they do in college which is why I think Newton has a great shot at being a succesful starting QB. However, Gabbert is used to doing everything himself and probably would like to keep it that way which is just not going to happen.

However, I do see some QB's getting a chance and actually playing decently but not well enough to establish themselves as a franchise QB.

I Like

Cam Newton- Auburn (Has all the talent to become a great QB)

Christian Ponder- FSU (Very intelligent and smart player)

Colin Kaepernick- Nevada (Reminds of Cam Newton, not as moblie but a better pocket QB)

Andy Dalton- TCU (The Ginga Ninja is a great leader and a decent player as well)

Greg McElroy- Alabama (If he can stay healthy he can be a sold back-up in the NFL)

T.J. Yates- UNC (Great leader and has the ability to throw the long ball like no other)

Tyrod Taylor- Virginia Tech (If he can play like his predecesor Mike Vick then why not pick him up)

Taylor Potts- Texas Tech (Interesting prospect with decent potential)

I Don't Like

Blaine Gabbert- Mizzou (Unproven and not really great at any specific part of the QB position)

Jake Locker- Washington (Always a roller coaster with him at the helm)

Ryan Mallet- Arkansas (Drug Addicts/Dealers don't translate to NFL QB's)

Ricky Stanzi- Iowa (The most inconsistent player in the draft)

Scott Tolzien- Wisconsin (Has the worst arm strength I have ever seen)

Nathan Enderle- Idaho (When he is not on he plays like Jake Delhomme, see Nebraksa game)

Joshua Portis- California- PA (Probably has the worst character issues out of all QB's in the draft)

Pat Devlin- Delaware (Seems uninterested and unmotivated unlike is predecesesor Joe Flacco)

Adam Weber- Minnesota (Turnover machine)

Jerrod Johnson- Texas A&M (I don't make much of combine performances, but his was awful)

Mitch Mustain- USC (USC quarterbacks = NO, unless you are hispanic [Mark Sanchez] or actually good [Carson Palmer])

Ben Chappell- Indiana (Throws a lot of touchdowns, however he throws just as many interceptions)

    • You and I both know there isn't a coach we could or can still hire that can "fix" Bryce Young. Even at mighty Alabama with one of the best modern coaches in college football history Mac Jones was still a better QB than Bryce Young. Mac Jones.... We already know how you feel about Canales on a personal level so in that regard you wanting him fired is not news. You don't have to disguise it behind this shroud of rabble about not fixing Bryce Young. To his credit he somehow had us competive against the Chiefs and the Eagles on the road with #9. But no coaching staff can overcome their starting QB turning the ball over 4 times. We definitely have developed some of our younger offensive pieces. And as far as Evero goes he has earned criticism and if he's fired so be it but in his defense many of us said in the offseason this defensive roster was a disaster waiting to happen given the resources we spent on the offense while neglecting the defense. That was Dan Morgan's plan. He swung too hard toward offense to salvage the Bryce Young trade. That's on him. We can scream about XL all we want but at least he's actually been on the field for the most part. The Brooks pick was a luxury pick at the time and now it is a Hurney level blunder. Dan Morgan has gotten a lot of early praise here when in reality he's unequivocally deserving of significant criticism. But if you say that some people get up in arms because he's a former Panther. Big whoop. He has just as much to prove this upcoming season as Canales. That's why to me in my own personal opinion I say one more season and then if it's more of the same say goodbye to both.
    • It's a decent vid with compelling reasons for his opinion. But, my thing is is that you simply can't draft McMillan thinking he is a surefire WR1. There are questions. His 40---rightly or wrongly---will play a part. I'd think that his splits (which will speak more to his game translating to the pros in my mind) are more important.  As much as you're trying to sell us that McMillan is a don't-overthink-it-type-of-player, I wouldn't say that's the case. Workouts will play a part in all of this.  At this point, I like the thought of Tetairoa. That's as much as I can give you right now.
