Tony Softli on Cam

A lot of people do that. Most are told they need to to enhance their image. Did Cam do it of his own volition, or was he prompted to do something? Would be interesting when he started doing these things...

In the video the principal said he contacted them prior to the football season and during the season he was still taking time out going weekly. He seemed genuine in the video or he is a great actor.

I've came to a conclusion. The success of Cam Newton relies on his shoulders. I'm tired of seeing speculations about character issues or he can be elite or not. No one knows what will happen. If he wants it, he has to go get it. I "think" he can be great just as well as I think Clausen can but it depends on attitude and will. I know it is another different sport, but look at Kobe. He came straight out of high school with character issues per say and also looked terrible in games (Utah game- he throw up how many airballs). What made he great now and stand out from the rest was his work ethic. He put in work to get where he is at and that is what Cam, Luck, eve Clausen has to do if they want to be great. We put people on a pedestal too much when they are normal like us. They have to work success and so do we.

Whether for good or bad, I wouldn't take much from Tony Softli seriously.

He ran the Panthers college scouting department through some of our worst drafts (including that disaster in 2005) before - for God only knows what reason - the Rams gave him full personnel control and he helped guide that team straight into the toilet.

Gil Brandt, Rick Gosselin, Mike Mayock, Nolan Nawrocki...all good sources. Softli? Not with a resume' like that :nonod:

Funny, I was thinking the same thing. He doesn't exactly have a stellar track record. Still it does prove a counterpoint to some of the negative press and show how much of a polarizing guy Newton is. People either love or hate him.

yup. I heard that line ("people either love him or hate him") right before his media workout, and it's so true. I really believe he's a polarizing figure.

There have been plenty of negative opinions on Cam but none have been as OTT as Nawrocki's report. I think that's what most people have a problem with.

His was... disturbingly specific. The smile thing bugs me still, not sure why.

I do think someone out there really believes that besides Nawrocki. Doesn't mean it's true, but I wish I knew who and why. Wonder if it's the person who asked him about 'disobeying' his coaches in the BCS game.

Given that he too was just repeating what sources told him, there'd have to be.

I am sure there is truth in both reports. It isn't so much the way Cam presents himself but how people interpret his motives. Seems that people see him very differently depending on who you talk to.

A guy that reports what scouts are telling him.

Well I guarantee you that Softli has more contacts with scouts and college personell than Nawrocki does, just because he's been doing this for so long. This has nothing to do with whether he was a good director of scouting for the Panthers either. Hell, how many real draft picks has Nawrocki been personally responsible for, as opposed to mock drafts where there is no penalty for getting it wrong?

I think the people around him, particularly his father, sometimes influence those opinions too.

You know, I don't remember any of you claiming that Cam had a fake smile, after you saw him for yourself on the NFL Newtwork or ESPN. He certainly didn't look fake to me, and I don't believe Mayock or any of those other guys thought he as fake either. If they did, they certainly hid it well, because they were smiling right along with him.

Actually, people would tell you Nawrocki is the most "plugged in" of all the draft analysts out there.

As mentioned before, I'd feel the same thing about Softli if he were supporting my point of view. Ditto Matt Millen. I'm not interested in either of their judgments because I've seen what happened to team that listened to what they had to say.

"He's just relaying info" you say? Fine. So is Nawrocki. So are others.
