The John Fox Mentality. Cmon

How much have the Steelers, Patriots and Packers gambled? Colts?

The Steelers played it safe after 1983 but never won the Super Bowl again until they drafted a QB in the first round in 2004. The Colts played it safe since Unitas retired in '72 but never won the Super Bowl till they drafted Manning in '98 with the first pick of the draft.

The Patriots and Packers situations are unique. Packers have a history of great QBs. They have however gambled by picking first round QBs. The Packers gambled when they traded for Favre because they weren't that good since the Starr era. Then they drafted Rodges in the first round a few years ago.

The Patriots did draft Bledsoe with the first pick, but never were taken seriously until they found their franchise QB and HOF coach then started winning Super Bowls. The Pats didnt gamble though, they just got lucky. How many times does it happen where a team picks a QB in the 7th round and he ends up a future hall of famer? Along with his coach? Going by statistics, you most likely aren't going to find your franchise guy in those late rounds yet a select few insist that we keep that strategy.

So if you go by history, teams that play it safe and decide not to gamble to try to find their franchise QB usually aren't relevant until many many years down the road when they finally wake up and decide they need that guy. Not waiting till rounds 5-7

Nice of y'all to point out the winners, now roll out the laundry list of teams that were on the losing side.

FYI The Patriots took several shots at franchise QBs and lost. The Colts tired a time or two and lost out as well. Nice reconstructive history.

Since 1982, I'll give you a chance to figure out which team drafted Art Schlicter and Jeff George. The team that drafted Drew Bledsoe also drafted Tony Eason in the first. Those are just the first round QBs, not any second rounders or lower.

Hint: It's the teams you claim didn't take chances on drafting QBs or playing it safe.

oh lol at JOAT saying the Steelers have gotten to be a premier team recently by not taking a chance

they spent years exiting the playoffs with mediocre QBs like Kordell Stewart before they put their chips in to take Ben, and if he was a prospect today, people would be bitching about how his competition level wasn't very challenging and he doesn't play in a pro-style offense, therefore he's ryan leaf reincarnate just like everybody else is

Funny, Kordell Stewart WAS their franchise QB, but he didn't pan out. Isn't ironic how this debate is shaping up? Name the HOFers, but pooing on or ommitting the guys that flopped. Very convenient. Remember, Stewart was the next coming of Randell Cunningham? Probably not.

Stewart was raw with tons of upside. Wierd, it seems we have a QB like that this draft. You could point out that Stewart went in the second round and not the first. That said, the Steelers were looking for their man and got a project that never worked out...not due his draft status, but because he was never a complete QB to begin with.

One more point, the John Fox metality got us 7 or more wins a season until last year when TOP BRASS cut his nuts off and said deal with it by cutting/releasing/trading a number of still pretty darn good veterans. Were we a playoff team with those guys? Probably not. Would we have won more games than two? Bet the farm on it.

Holy fug, so you mean teams can draft a QB in the first round and those QBs turn out to be busts sometimes? Wow, this is riveting. I completely understand why we shouldn't ever draft a QB in the first round no matter what now. Thank you.

ncbobcat literally makes the worst arguments.

KillerKat: "All of those teams didn't win poo until they took a QB in the first round."

ncbobcat: "YEAH BUT THEY DRAFTED QBS IN THE FIRST THAT WERE BUSTS TOO REVISIONIST HISTORY BLAH BLAH BLAH?"

"How does that change the fact that those teams still had to gamble on a first round QB to get where they are now?"

"IT DOESN'T LOL I AM SO SMART."

7 wins is not impressive. The fact remains that John Fox was coach for 9 years and we made the playoffs 3 times.

I don't expect the playoffs every year as that is unrealistic for any team, but I think making the playoffs 50% of the time is a good benchmark.

the point ncbobcat was making is that merely drafting a quarterback does not guarantee the playoffs. It takes much more than that.

Further, recent teams have proven that your "last piece" can be the franchise QB and they don't need to be taken at #1 to be great QBs...

    • I mean that’s not an argument I go with… But in ACC play, both Clemson and SMU covered the spread more than Miami.  Miami didn’t cover in 3 games.
