The John Fox Mentality. Cmon

I am also a PSL owner and want a winning product. Unlike you I will be pissed if the Panthers pass AGAIN on another QB in the 1st round for a position player, and that kid goes on to be great for another team while the Panthers are perenial celler dwellers in the NFC South.

Your perspective. I'll be pisssed if we do take a QB in this, one of the weakest QB classes in a while. In deeper classes Newton probably would be no better than a late first rounder...not even metioned as a top 10 prospect.

Reaching for the sake of need is not the smart play, IMO.

If we were fine with 8-8 Fox would still be here. We've averaged 8-8 for the last 9 years. There's a risk with every pick. We aren't the Raiders. We could recover rather quickly if picking Newton fails. The reward outweighs the risk in this instance.

clarify.

And how many 10+ winning seasons in a row and playoff appearances does Manning have??????? I will take what Manning has done and his one Superbowl win ANY DAY of the week. I am not saying Cam is Manning but come on.

Your probably not 4'5", but the point flew completely over you head. The assumption that we HAVE TO, DIRE, MUST, IMPERATIVE, LIFE OR DEATH take a QB#1 overall in this draft (reminder--WEAK QB class) or this franchise is screwed for ever more is no more than a red herring. The reason is more guys in recent years have done better NOT being the #1 overall pick. These mid-late first round prospects have actually fared better. That was the point. Would I take Peyton Manning? Who wouldn't? However, most #1 or top 5 guys have not produced nearly as much as the guys who were less hyped and drafted later.

If you think taking Peyton Manning #1 overall was an easy, no-risk decision (at the time) you're unforgivably retarded and I hope Ryan Mallet beats you about the head with a tire iron whilst on a coke binge. Polian himself said it was the most difficult decision of his life.

Also the Steelers took Rapeface at 11. A dude from a school in a lightweight conference who played in the spread offense. That's a fairly big risk, even at 11. It'd be like taking Newton if he declared after he left Blinn in the same spot.

huh?

If the salary cap is anything similar to the one that was in place before the CBA expired, the higher the pick, the bigger the contract. The bigger the contract, the more liability the team has tied up into a single player. Top five rookie money was INSANELY high. Top ten was still really high. Once you got out of the top 10 picks, the money and contracts start to get more reasonable.

Let's just assume a rookie cap doesn't get done and similar parameters are set up to the old CBA, the #1 pick will ham-string this franchise for years to come, good play or bad. IF we are fortunate to land our franchise QB, no harm, no foul. However, if Newton or Gabbert wind up busts, not only will the team not be winning, our cap liability in this one player will be some absurd number and worse they aren't getting you anywhere.

Same reason we had to let Peppers go, the only difference bieng Peppers wasn't a rookie and we KNEW Peppers could play. Yet we still let him go. You can say all you want about happiness and the sort, but his enormous contract is what ultimately sent Peppers packing.

I think it would be a huge mistake to take Newton

He would be a worse choice then Darius or even Gabbert.

They are both more NFL ready and would be better picks.

We need to give Clausen at least another year before

writing him off.

Well this is where we disagree  I dont pay to much attention to College football, but I seem to recall people chiming in and saying to not forget about and overlook Cam when all the Andrew Luck convo was going on. Not saying he is better than Luck, etc but from my perspective Cam was always in the QB discussion.

As far as the word I used "pissed"... maybe I should rephrase that. This time around with the draft I am very pleased and happy the Panthers are actually serious of looking at QB's. In past drafts I was truelly pissed they kept passing on them in RD 1 and going for position players.

So to re-state my comment....... "I would be extremely disspointed if the Panthers dont draft a QB". I say that because this year for the first time they are actually serious and looking at drafting a QB and if they end up passing it means after all the due dilegence Marty, Rivera, etc dont think any of them are going to be a franchise QB. And that is why I will be disspointed this year vs pissed like years passed.

Cool. :cheers2: This year is pretty obvious there is a pro QB crowd and the anti-QB crowd. We just lie in different camps. I've never been a reach type of guy and I just feel that's exactly what we will do by taking a QB this year just because we "need" one. I wasn't very excited about the prospect of taking Luck this year, but he's 10x better than the rest of this class. Once Andrew decided to go back to Stanford, I went from uneasy about taking a QB this year #1 overall to 100% against the idea.

Difference in opinions, that's all. :D

"freeman's got bust written all over him"

"sanchez was a one year wonder he'll never amount to anything in the pros"

"bradford is damaged goods"

"matt ryan reminds me more of tim couch than tom brady"

and one of these quotes is usually followed up with the same secondhand opinion spouting drivel about the trenches and the most overrated saying in the league "DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS". Like a) by taking a QB we abandon passion for defense and b) defense scores all the SB winning team's points too

I believe if we take Cam, It will be a lot less risk than people assume. The coaching staff is doing their homework...We have no reason not to trust them. In fact we have reason to trust them...They are every where scouting every possible prospect. I hope they do pick Cam because that means that he beat out every other prospect and not necessarily that the team is taking this huge chance on him

    • I mean that’s not an argument I go with… But in ACC play, both Clemson and SMU covered the spread more than Miami.  Miami didn’t cover in 3 games.
