The John Fox Mentality. Cmon

We're in an almost unique position in the NFL. We had a team last year that was simultaneously undergoing a massive change in on-the-field leadership, working for a lame-duck coaching staff, and starting way too many rookies at skill positions. Moreover, we were almost too sensitive to the injury bug (possibly because the coaches were leaving anyway, so the FO got risk-averse). And we stunk it up big-time on the field.

If you go back through the last ten years, you'll be hard-pressed to find any team taking in the top three that's anywhere near as talented as we are. Maybe the Chargers in 2004, but most of the teams spent a couple years earning the right to pick at the top (take a look at how often Detroit and Cleveland are in there). I would argue that even without a pick, we're young enough and talented enough to get back to the middle of the pack this year.

And because of that, there's never been a better time to take a risk. It's not like we'll end up in Raider territory if Newton is a bust, it just means we swung for the fences and missed.

who do you think?

Why do people bring up a 2-14 record and being a winning team when talking about Cam? If we draft Cam, our record won't magically be better all of a sudden and there ARE other ways to win even if we don't chose Cam.

I am all for taking chances, Cam so be it but that doesn't mean all chances end in reward, so let's not assume that just yet.

Yes it will. I really beleive that Newton or Gabbert could come in here and do a better job than Pickles this year. Would they be rough and make mistakes. Yes. But even that will be better than Clausen on his best day. Plus we need to pick up a veteran as well. I don't want to put my eggs in the basket of who we have right now. I would be estatic to be wrong but I really don't want another terrible year like 2010.

How much have the Steelers, Patriots and Packers gambled? Colts?

You cannot be serious.

Steelers went into this season with a QB twice accused of rape and made overtures in the offseason that they were willing to trade him.

Packers told the most famous, successful and popular player in team history to take a hike so they could go with the younger QB they took in the first round.

Colts gave serious consideration to drafting Ryan Leaf.

It's still a gamble even if you get it right.

I'm all for taking a risk, but will Cam be self motivated enough to get better on his own? Just in case some things still haven't changed.

For me, I understand the concern some have of Cam's mechanics and the offensive style he played in college.

What I cannot understand is this knock that he's not mentally tough enough to play at the next level. The kid won every game he could at the top level of college football in the toughest league in the country, and he did it under more scrutiny than any player in the history of the game.

To me that's worth something.

Reading that Hurney radio interview thread it definitely seems like we are shifting towards a new mentality as far as the draft goes. Saw in one of the quotes Hurney stated something like with no clear cut #1 they will go for a special type of talent that's not Fox like.

We gotta take chances with the position we are in no telling when we will be at the number 1 draft position again. Like I've been saying address the biggest question mark (QB) and the most important position in football today..

I for one think Cam will put in the work at the nexts level listening to the interviews everything tells me he wants to be one of the greats and understands he has to put in the work time will tell...
