Hurney on WFNZ @ 8:15 am today

Thought I'd try to get most of this...

MA: NC pro day..

Hurney: Lots of great guys going to get drafted up there. Did a great job.

MA: Nolan Narwocki... seemed a little bit of a personal attack, says guys with teams have said spot on... do you hear anything like that?"

Hurney: "Well, I mean sure, I think you hear on it, all these players, every one, not just Cam Newton, I think there's always things you investigate I mean, to me I don't pay much attention to all that other stuff, ... First of all I read he hasn't met Cam Newton... So who's he talked to? he talked to decision makers... he hasn't talked to me... I don't know, could he be talking to people who put smoke screens out there... Everyone has an agenda in what they do... He's done his job, he's selling books... these things are what make the NFL so popular because there's so much to talk about... the bottom line is we have to make a decision we're going to have to live with and it'll be a critical decision... we're spending a lot of time on our top guys... in the next three weeks we poke holes in every one of the top guys and everyone has holes... but they've all accomplished a lot to have us talking about them..."

MA: "No Bradford/Ryan according to Wisenhunt. Are Newton/Bradford notch below?"

Hurney: "Before they played in the NFL there weren't a lot of people crazy about Bradford and Ryan. At this point teams weren't sure if they should take Clausen or Bradford (...). Good year, you can look back and say you always liked them. Jump to college to pro is so hard to project on qb. QB position is more of a "risk" quote unquote than any other position on the board. If you really go back in time right where we are in the draft there isn't that certainty in the draft. Everyone's got questions at this point."

MA: "Which opinions do you weigh heavily on? Outisde of your org, do you listen to other opinions?"

Hurney: "I have more access to people than Nolan Nowracki... going to meet Cam Newton, spend time with him individually, meet him... again who knows. When there's no last name attached, you don't know. It's great for people to argue and disagree but when you do what we do you want to go to the horse's mouth. That's why we spend all this time traveling around talking to guys who have spent time.

MA: Can you count the number of people on one hand that you have met, had dinner with?

Hurney: As far as top pick, 5-7 we have met. We have not made a decision. You always have an order in your mind but it can change and you are always being open minded and objective and make sure you are going down the right path. This year is a year you could 5, 6 different teams that would pick a different guy #1. I think that selecting a good player, I would hope we could do that, the thing you are dealing with at #1, it is the player that will have the most impact on your organization. You don't want to be up here all the time. You have to look at the quarterbacks to see if there is an elite quarterback up there. It's real simple, teams at the bottom have great QBs. If you get through that and there isnt' an elite quarterback, you go to the position that has the biggest impact on your team."

MA: has the process on elimination started? when will you cross names off?

Hurney: It hasn't started but there is a daily order but it could change, i think there's an order.

MA List: Gab/Newt/Green/Mallett/Fairley/Dareus/Peterson

Hurney: Did you get that list from Narwocki? Some hits and some misses. Not the actual list. I think that it's important, you never know. It can change day to day, anything can happen. I don't think this is a year there will be a lot of action with trades at #1. You just want to keep all your options open.

MA: Mallett coming here to Carolina. Will he be in consideration for #1 or is he brought in perhaps for a later pick?

Hurney: He's one of our 30 players you can meet with, do medicals. We're going to bring in a variety of players, don't want to go into who or where they fight but we can bring in a variety.

MA: Bowers workout? Who will be there?

Hurney: We will have people down there. Rivera, Hurney will not be there.

MA: Rookie payscale make it easier to trade?

Hurney: Hasn't been a lot of action in the past up there because of the pay part of it... Nobody called for the 2nd pick before we took Julius in 02.

MA TD and other FAs?

Hurney: We are committed to keeping our core. That is all I can say right now.

Caller: Whats your mindset when you get down to the later rounds of the draft?

Hurney: If a player is on the board in the 5th/6th that was on the board for 3rd/4th, you take them. After that, you go with the player that might have that blue quality. Also the guy that has the best fit and is smart and will be able to play a variety of different positions.

MA: Have you lost faith in Jimmy Clausen since you are looking at QBs at #1?

Hurney: Not at all. Not at all. You just have a rare opportunity to look at the best quarterbacks out there. Opportunity to go through this process. A lot of stuff about me being only supporter about Jimmy. Not true at all. We think he has good upside and can be a good QB in this league, but you always have to look at the #1 position in this game when you're drafting at this spot. Can't find who these people talk to who think that (that nobody supports Jimmy Clausen), would be easier to understand if you knew who it came from (what does that mean exactly?).

MA: Cam Newton has highest ceiling, highest risk. Would you take highest risk or the safest pick?

Hurney: I think this: When you say "risk," what you're dealing with the QB position is that 1) projecting the QBs coming out of the spread going to a pro offense. Cam has ONLY played 1 year, like to see 2-3 years of college work. At this area, you are looking for a guy that can be your elite quarterback. We feel we have players who can be GOOD quarterbacks. Trying to see if there is a guy you can't possibly pass up.

MA: Is it not important that guy is not elite right away? Not need to be an impact player right away?

Hurney: It's unrealistic to think you're going to take a rookie QB and he's going to excel. Now, that's happening with Ben, Ryan, Flacco. Been examples of recent examples of guys coming in and being successful, but has been strong supporting cast around them and coaching staff has done a great job. By nature of this game, it is extremely hard for a rookie to come in and have a major impact.

MA: Veteran QBs... Kolb, Palmer... Try to do something to get one?

Hurney: I'm not talking about veterans so I dont' say the wrong thing but anybody that knows me knows every avenue is an option.

Caller Question: How much is a PSL right now?

Hurney: All kinds of different... Caller: If you take Cam Newton, I will buy a PSL. Hurney: We laugh, but what you're saying is, and again, that is why this discussion, the QB position, is so dynamic, it does create excitement and difference of opinion. It creates so much talk... Everyone has a strong opinion on this subject and that's what makes this exciting... If you have the top pick it's a critical decision for the organization.

MA: JR stayed away from your and Fox business. Will JR have a voice in decision?

Hurney: He leaves football to football guys. This is our decision.

MA: Would ticket sales and buzz from drafting Cam Newton play into it?

Hurney: No. Winning comes into that area. (its okay guys Im sure jerseys still count ;) )

Caller: If it looks like the lockouts will impact things will that influence taking a QB?

Hurney: Great question Dave, great question... We've discussed it but I think the answer is no... You are looking at players to help you for a long period of time so this isn't just for this season and we have talked about it.

MA: Armanti Edwards pick - did it make you mad to hear Fox said it doesn't look good right now?

Hurney: I react internally, but the bottom line is there is so much talk, talk doesn't matter... AE was a rookie and I think he'll be a good player. We'll see. All this talk is great and we can say whatever we want but we have to win football games. Armanti could be a great football player and I believe he will be.

I did not get a sense from Hurney in this interview that he was leaning towards any particular position at #1. All I heard was him talking about his philosophy of not telling you the answer to that question. He is a poker player through and through. Still, I'm pleased with what he says about the process and I can dig it. I think Rivera's oft-referenced organizational skills are either rubbing off on Hurney or really fitting comfortably into how Hurney wants to do things. They're going to feel really good about whatever player they pick, because they have done and are doing the legwork. Both in research of the player and discussion of the philosophy behind drafting that player.

it's hard to explain, but before I transcribed it I felt like we were going to take a QB for sure. I don't know why. It was something about the way he spoke.

after I did transcribe most of it though I just wasn't sure anymore.

He did slip up when he answered the Mallet question, and tried to recover, but it was too late. It is clear he is not a candidate for the first pick.

Yeah I agree, Mallet isn't being considered for 1st overall. Hurney slipped up a bit this time. Looks like I was right about the decision making process too. It's gonna be QB > DT > everything else. Safe to say it's either gonna be a QB or Dareus imo.
