I totally agree this has been contentious. I just don't think there has been a prospect at #1 with the history of Cam Newton. There's been guys with questions but never with the kind of history of Newton that I can recall. He's just extremely polarizing because of his past, his skill set, and how people think he will transition.

This forum has really gone to poo when it comes to the Newton posts, tbh. I'm part of the bile that fills these posts, I know. But man, it's just one giant fuging circle. We've covered every bit of it now.

The "contentious" part is an annual thing. Some of the debates you're seeing here are nothing compared to the Manning-Leaf, Manning-Rivers, Smith-Rodgers debates (all involved bigger franchises and more highly thought of prospects).

The legal aspect of the discussion? In the past decade or so, there have been a fair share of prospects that wound up in the top five who had major legal concerns - Pac Man Jones being the most infamous - but none of them were quarterbacks.

I haven't looked at every single year mind you, but to get a quarterback that had this particular kind of question against him you might have to go back as far as Art Schlichter.

I know there were loads of questions about Ryan Leaf's maturity and JaMarcus Russell's work ethic, among other things.

As far as actual legal/criminal issues, I'd have to look back.

The only one that springs immediately to mind is Warren Sapp (failed drug test). You could say Dez Bryant last year, but I don't know that he was a legit #1 candidate.

Lets look at this year. Peterson seems to have recruting issues as well and yet I don't see many folks other than you saying that it changes their mind about picking him for example. There are still folks saying pick him despite the fact that his past is shady and he scored the lowest wonderlic of any top prospect right next to Green's very low score as well.

The fact is he was in fights and conflicts in high school.

You always seems to miss the point. Some folks thought he was a first or second rounder and the point was that his legal issues were not documented and discussed like Newton.

With all the conversation and scrutiny between Manning and Leaf, how did it not come out that Leaf frequented his agent's house for booze, women and money. Apparently it was well known among the players on the team.

probably because taking money from agents happens so much NFL teams don't give a poo about it and didn't care to expose it when they found out about it... if they found out about it. Luchs lost Leaf before the draft.

I disagree with this. Nobody had to look hard to find out about his arrest or his involvement in the pay to play scandal, because it wasn't just him taking money from an agent but his father trying to sell him to a school... which is what PP is now getting a lot of flack for. Now, did the twitter/blog poo contribute to the cheating allegations? That is very possible.

Didn't the Colts hire a a PI to follow Manning and Leaf around and dig up everything about them?

You seem to get caught up on the media impression, but clearly GMs and scouting teams don't give a crap about them.

You also fail to appreciate that there is only so much scrutiny because everyone has an opportunity to make things go viral, which was never around before. So you can guarantee that if another potential #1 pick who has made questionable decisions in the past will also get picked to pieces.

The thing is, Newton made mistakes in the past, it's only natural for them to come up when he is about to be given a millionaires fortune.

I heard Hurney said this morning that this report was bull poo and he has better resources and access to NFL scouts than Nawrocki does. If true just further throws Nawrocki's credibility in the crapper.
