Did Nawrocki cross the line?

Any behavior that may risk the player being available to the team should be a concern

Agreed. However, getting busted by a mall cop for dress code probably won't get you hard time.

My biggest concern with Bryant is the tardiness at team meetings.

Again, this isn't unique or new. It's just new to us because we have the #1 pick this offseason. Next year it'll probably be someone else's turn, and the debate will likely be just as contentious (especially if the top choices are quarterbacks).

As to whether teams should have looked deeper into Bryant, a lot of them did. They're the ones that didn't draft him.

The one that did? Well...are you really surprised?

Actually it is unique and new. Russell, Young, Ryan and Bradford combined did not garner as much negative press as Newton has by himself. And spare the links to articles pointing out their issues. Of course there were some but not the volume nor swings from people who like him or hate him. If you couple that with the fact that there is no free agency news with the lockout, which filled everyone's attention between the end of the season and the draft, it is a rather unique situation.

how many times were russell, young, ryan, and bradford arrested before the draft? how many times were they embroiled in potential season-nullifying violations? how many significant off field problems did they have exactly that were "ignored"?

how much did young's negative press coverage increase after he started drawing negative attention to himself?

to me there is a correlation between stupid/bad poo off the field and negative press coverage.

but maybe I'm just blind to it and cam is being unfairly targeted.

We just need to keep in mind these guys are athletes, not someone in a public office. Give them hell for being late for meetings, absolutely, or anything else that has a direct impact on the team.

But in my mind, if someone is stupid enough to spend themselves into bankruptcy, that is their business. Same on the mall thing, it is juvenile and stupid, but is not a big deal in relation to a team.

We can say things like that till we're blue in the face. As long as it gets ratings/sells papers/generates hits, it'll continue to be reported.

Why do they not report on it when the kid at the local 7-11 gets busted for taking cash from the register? Because people don't need to know? No. It's because nobody gives a s--t :sosp:

Again, it's more than the incident, it sets a precedent and shows a pattern of behavior.

That's my concern.

Valid points. Remember though that athletes have been doing really stupid stuff for years. Pre-ESPN days, most of this stuff just got swept under the rug. Everything is so magnified now.

Athletes haven't changed all that much character wise, but the reporting on the issues has exploded.

There is no doubt that some of this he has brought on himself and he deserves some scrutiny and due diligence for sure. I just don't remember the highly polarized reports virtually contradicting themselves depending on the reporter. Perhaps it is because posters are constantly bringing them up on this message board every day so I am bombarded with crap constantly. And the lack of free agency makes the draft the only news right now. Still I have been a football fan for 40 years and this one has been as contentious as I can remember.

when was the last time that a #1 prospect has had as much off the field trouble early in his life as Newton did? does anyone with a better memory know?

I know there were loads of questions about Ryan Leaf's maturity and JaMarcus Russell's work ethic, among other things.

As far as actual legal/criminal issues, I'd have to look back.

The only one that springs immediately to mind is Warren Sapp (failed drug test). You could say Dez Bryant last year, but I don't know that he was a legit #1 candidate.

Pac Man Jones was drafted top five. Can't recall him being a contender for the #1 either. Peter Warrick was another top five (the shoe scandal).

I totally agree this has been contentious. I just don't think there has been a prospect at #1 with the history of Cam Newton. There's been guys with questions but never with the kind of history of Newton that I can recall. He's just extremely polarizing because of his past, his skill set, and how people think he will transition.

This forum has really gone to poo when it comes to the Newton posts, tbh. I'm part of the bile that fills these posts, I know. But man, it's just one giant fuging circle. We've covered every bit of it now.

I really hope the lockout ends and FA gets going soon.
