YAS: Panthers need to take Cam Newton

Honestly his stats are average at best. Without that defense the jets would be a 7-9 team last year. He is not a franchise quarterback right now either. He is a game manager who doesn't screw the game up.

A franchise player is a good player the team builds around at that position and doesn't plan to replace.

The Jets aren't going to be replacing Sanchez any time soon. He may just be average but his teammates and coaches believe in him. He's still pretty damn young, too.

He may be "their" franchise QB, but he's not "a" franchise QB. And they'll never win a Super Bowl with Sanchez at QB unless he finally makes that leap into top-10 territory the media seem to have him poised for every preseason.

But playing at his current level, the only reason they've gotten to two AFC title games is because of their defense, which I think everyone will admit is great. They could do worse, sure, but Sanchez is more of a liability to that team than anything.

we are just defining franchise QBs differently. I see them as a quarterback you build around, that is a good player (and Sanchez is good for so little time, but the pressure will mount for him to produce), isn't necessarily elite, but is someone you plan on having at that position for some time.

See, I just disagree on the nature of a franchise player. To me, the franchise player is the best player on a team and the face of the franchise. A franchise QB is a top-tier QB that you know you can contend for every year and eventually win a championship with.

that's fine, no problem disagreeing.. I see a franchise quarterback as one of the faces of the franchise, sure (and Sancehz is) but they need not be the best player on the team, but they are usually one of the better players.

I don't think they need to be top tier QBs... when we brought in Clausen and told him he was our franchise QB, I think the hope was he'd be a top tier QB but I don't think Hurney seriously thought the second he entered the league he was all that.

To be fair, I do think Sanchez has a chance to be a very good QB. I just don't see it yet. He shows flashes that make you think he's getting there, but then turns around and has 2-3 awful/bad games back to back to back.

If he ever does find that kind of consistency the Jets are going to be damn dangerous for years to come.

lol I would kill for a Sanchez. You guys are overlooking something really important about Sanchez - when the chips are down and you need one drive to keep your team alive, Sanchez can give you that drive. He has that determination and grit to his game. That's all I want in a QB really, that's what wins you superbowls. I would've been happy with good Jake too. Tommy John just screwed all that up. If Gabbert isn't a guy who can singlehandedly take you to the superbowl, I'm fine with that. Just give me a guy who could win it for us when we're there.

He has to be able to get us there before he can win it. The days where "good Jake" can do that are over. The "worst" QB in the league I can imagine taking his team to a Super Bowl would be Matt Schaub, Jay Cutler, or Eli Manning - I consider all of those guys to be at around the same level. Obviously Eli's won his ring, but with a LOT of help from his defense in one of the biggest upsets of all time.

Having said that, there are 13 QB's in the league right now that I feel are capable of getting their team to a Super Bowl (with or without a little help from the defense/running game):

01. Peyton Manning

02. Tom Brady

03. Aaron Rodgers

04. Drew Brees

05. Philip Rivers

06. Ben Roethlisberger

07. Matt Ryan

08. Tony Romo

09. Josh Freeman

10. Eli Manning

11. Jay Cutler

12. Matt Schaub

13. Mike Vick

And out of those 12 names I'd say maybe the top 7-8 are capable of leading their team to a Super Bowl AND winning it with their arm the way Rodgers did this year for GB. Now, that obviously leaves off a few young players who may be soon joining the list, but you get the idea.

No.

Sanchez type with a strong run game and a nasty D would be fine by me. It's not like Big Ben would have sniffed the playoffs without LeBeau and several HoF'ers on the Steeler's roster.

Exactly. I remember Steelers bitching that Ben was even playing and how they would have to carry the team, which they did. Now he is ok now, but if Ben wasn't on the Steelers, the kid wouldn't have two rings. There hasn't been a luckier SOB in NFL History in regards to walking into a perfect situation as the QB.

Imagine if you had Mike Vick and the Jets D. You might actually win Super Bowls instead of claiming you will every year and then falling short.

Funny thing to say, since Vick technically hasn't won as many play off games as Sanchez yet.

Sanchez is so awful in the regular season, but usually comes through in the post season. No idea why, but it's like he has a twin brother than is called up in January to make a run in the playoffs.

Sanchez in the playoffs: 94.3 QB rating, 1155 yards, 9 touchdowns, 3 interceptions, 7.64 YPA, 60% completion rate... compared to his regular season stats that is night and day difference.

Really taking away a lot of credit from GB defense and giving it all to Rodgers?

Wow
