Racism Quiz

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

I got the most right on the quiz. What i saw was keywords like has smarts (white), athletic, quick feet (black), comparison to Rex and Losman (white), comparison to Tavaris Jackson (black), etc. Am I right Scot?

Actuallyyyyy, no.

About the names? yeah, but I took those out after you posted to remove those clues because I realized that made it too easy.

On the methodology. I didn't actually look for keywords. I started with a group of guys I had in mind and found their reviews, in the process also finding a few more.

And to be clear, not all the bad reviews are of white quarterbacks, and not all the good ones are of bad quarterbacks. That also would have made it too simple.

But yes, you did the best early. A couple of guys have beaten you since.

Calling someone racist is very different from claiming someone fell victim to racial bias.

Just because Nawrocki isn't racist doesn't mean he can't fall into the trap of racial bias.

How hard is it to understand that?

Actually it is the very problem. Us white fellas have convinced ourselves it doesn't exist so they belittle it, or make a quiz game to literally "trivialize" it.

Instead of worrying so much about defending Nawrocki's honor so much how about taking 5 minutes to think about the people who live it everyday.

Like my basketball buddy who spent the night in jail for simply walking through a neighborhood while a white home owner called the cops because he "looked suspicious". Then he was taken to the station and questioned about a break in from 6 months earlier that had nothing to do with him.

Or my other basketball buddy who was stopped twice in his car and was forced to sit on the side if the road while his car was searched despite no probable cause.

Even if you think Nawrocki was fair and balanced with his critique it is contrary to what has been reported by Yas, Wyche, and Brandt in recent days.

So you maybe right that some of us can't prove that racial bias played a part in his

analysis. But you can't prove it didn't. And a quiz that proves nothing yet trivializes racial bias, isn't enough to change anyone's mind who has seen the ramifications of it.

The greatest trick the Devil performed was convincing the world he doesn't exist.

See, and here you go again just trying to say the same thing in a different way.

If it's "racial bias" that Nawrocki suffers from, then we ought to be able to tell by common themes in his writing.

You can't find them (in your case, you're not even going to test it).

There, I just aced your quiz.

How can I say that? Because ANYONE who is really going to look at these subjective descriptions, that IS NOT racist, isn't going to assume ANY sort of race to describe any of these people.

Why? Because the success or failure of a pro athlete is not attributable to that person's race. It's a culmination of environmental upbringing, intelligence levels, cultural expectations, situation, physical talent and support from family and coaches.

This is seriously the most unscientific, pointless "quiz" ever, and really speaks to a fundamental flaw in your thought process on race.

Coward

Come on. Nawrocki is racist (or racially boased), remember? We should be able to tell that in what he writes about certain prospects.

Unless, maybe, the whole accusation was a steaming pile of horse $#&@

Yeah, this is a good point. I think there's a difference in those terms but they get used interchangably often, and when they do it pretty much shuts down the discussion.

I think this is what a lot of people miss. Just because someone doesn't hate people of another race doesn't mean they don't have subtle or even unconscious reactions to people based on their race.

Maybe there are some exceptions, but I think if most of us are honest with ourselves we'll recognize that we do make these kinds of assumptions all the time. It doesn't mean we're "racist" but it does mean race still exists and still affects people's lives. Sometimes it's trivial, sometimes it's not.

My personal opinion is that there is racism that goes on but not collectively and not out in the open in the media, but it also goes both ways.

I also feel that anyone who brings up race whenever something doesn't go favorably for them is weak minded and is just looking for excuses.

Pretty much

My family comes from nothing and I never had any advantage given to me as a youth. I got jumped every single day of my life growing up because I was the only white kid in the area. There wasn't a single day of my life for a large time frame when I wasn't getting beaten on by the same two black kids and the same albino mexican, and most days a few more joined in for fun. I broke over 30 bones before I was 13 and had my jaw wired shut twice.

From that point you can choose two paths. The easy way or the hard way. I could claim racism and that life would never get better and bitch and moan or you can do things to change your situation. It's whether you want to view yourself as a victim or just realize certain people from all races are sh!tty fuking people and move on. Why let it consume you? Why give them the satisfaction? I could have made the choice then and there to hate all black people and all albino Mexicans but why? Did I get to claim racism when I was denied a college scholarship, mostly because I'm white, but was offered an academic grant instead because I had a 4.5 GPA?

If you are being really honest with yourself about this, Cam has done things in the past that cause concern. The laptop thing. Yes charges were dropped but it doesn't mean the act wasn't committed and that he could possibly have character issues (A Talib?). The repeated cheating. The running away and not facing consequences. The repeated traffic violations. The pay for play, and more importantly whether he lied about it. The disobeying coaches. The media only workout.

I guarantee you 100% that if none of those things happened and Cam just went to class, played football, and entered the draft, not one person would have called him a thug or questioned his character. His previous actions have brought those criticisms onto himself and although some are extreme, most can be justified.

If he didn't have his past, he would be criticized like all run option QBs are. Can they make the transition, can they make the needed reads, can they make the tough throws, do they have the footwork, etc

Nice post overall.

Not to turn this into an episode of Oprah, but wow man... And not so much b/c I'm in awe of your story, but because mine is very similar. I was born and raised in Fayetteville, NC (#64 in this national crime ranking, lol: http://os.cqpress.com/citycrime/2010/City_crime_rate_2010-2011_hightolow.pdf). We lived right in the city until I was about 9 and it got so bad that my parents moved us out into a rural area just on the county border then but I still did everything in Fayetteville - rec leagues, working, etc. But, when we lived there I went to school right by Fayetteville State, an HBC, which as many HBCs are, was located in a low-income area off a little street everyone from the Ville calls "The Murc" - Murchison Rd. I distinctly remember my sister and I being the only white kids on the bus one year, with maybe one other white kid riding the bus another year...

My sister was using the bathroom once and another student, who happened to be black, kicked the door in on her unprovoked, resulting in my sister having a concussion - she must've been in the 4th grade at the time. When asked why she did it in a meeting with my parents and her grandmother, the girl said "because she is white."

I also got some physical abuse - for instance, on the bus one day I was sitting in my seat, minding my business, waiting for my stop... I had this Garfield trapperkeeper (lol, they meant you were somebody in the early 90s), and it had all these fresh new pencils in the pencil pouch, I looked down by my seat to get it and realized it was gone. I was in kindergarten or the 1st grade at this time and when I looked back these two kids, who also happened to be black, were holding my stuff and going through it - taking the pencils out. So, being a kid, I just asked what they were doing - I really didn't think their intentions were bad. These kids were in like the 5th grade, so there were some big physical differences between me and them. The girl kept taking my stuff out of there as she told me to "shut the f*ck up and turn your white ass around" IIRC... Well, I didn't get the chance to turn around myself, because the boy that was stealing my stuff with her grabbed my head like he was palming a basketball and began slamming me head repeatedly into the back of the bus seat in front of me as hard as he could. I couldn't do anything...

There are so many other instances that happened while we were living in that area, but it's too much to type - those are just some of the more graphic examples that I remember, like life changing events... And part of the reason my parents moved from there was a dispute with the school board in which race became a factor as well.

And just like you, I came from pretty much nothing. My dad worked in a factory and should've been making middle-class money, but he was bad with spending and finance so we pretty much lived like a working class family and didn't have much. He'd buy us cheap clothes and we never had anything really nice. I had to work starting when I was 15 if I wanted anything for myself - including a haircut and clothes and so on... And come December, I will be the only member of my family to have graduated from a four-year university and I plan to attend law or grad school in media/film school afterwards.

So, although we've had it out on here recently over a lot of these issues, we are really a lot alike and although my story didn't quite have the extremes yours did (broken bones, etc.), they are very much the same. And just like you, I realized at a very early age that race doesn't make someone who they are - we are all the same - we're all human. There are just sh*tty people, no matter what the race. Go to various neighborhoods and you'll find sh*tty people no matter what race they are. And just as most students there may have mistreated me because I was the only white kid around, there was always a student (who happened to be black lol) that treated me as an equal and a friend at such an early age... Race has nothing to do with content of character and doesn't predetermine an entire people's behavior... But, to say that there aren't some people out there that feel this way is false, even in the media.

But this is why I'm always vigilant about covert racism and blatant racism as well - because if it isn't addressed, and pointed out as ignorance, then it just perpetuates itself and then permeates into even more of society.

If you are being really honest with yourself about this, Cam has done things in the past that cause concern. The laptop thing. Yes charges were dropped but it doesn't mean the act wasn't committed and that he could possibly have character issues (A Talib?). The repeated cheating. The running away and not facing consequences. His previous actions have brought those criticisms onto himself and although some are extreme, most can be justified.

And again, no doubt this stuff has to be checked out - but I don't find it to be a huge concern. He seems to be a pretty good hearted guy, and I'm under the impression that he was trying to act tough and get involved in stuff to prove himself when he got to Florida... Being the son of a preacher, clean-cut, etc., I think he was trying to prove he wasn't a "goody goody" kid and it backfired.

We all have gone through stages of maturation and may have done things that we regretted later, I know I have. It would be different if it was a crime involving violence or showed definite pre-meditation, but this seems like a kid trying to do anything to show he's not a "preacher's kid."

The cheating? I don't care about that much at all... We all have done it somewhere along the line in life. Everyone has.

But no doubt, it should be checked out to make sure it isn't a sign of something bigger. But this brings me to another point - how often have you heard a white guy that gets in trouble called a "thug." There are a lot of subtle things at work there - and I'm not attributing that to you, I'm saying in the media we hear that all the time or especially on call-in sportstalk shows.

If he didn't have his past, he would be criticized like all run option QBs are. Can they make the transition, can they make the needed reads, can they make the tough throws, do they have the footwork, etc

I just don't think he would be criticized like all the others... Being a black QB, I feel 99% of the time their intelligence or work ethic is brought into play by media/analysts. Here is a link to a book I've had to read for one of my classes - MediaSport, which gives a lot of the examples of covert racism in media coverage (although it says recent studies show it isn't as prevalent, but still present):
