Blaine Gabbert and Christian Ponder under center

Seems to me that Weinke was a better QB at Florida State then Ponder. We all see how that worked out.

What? We are drafting players from different centuries here. If Florida State made cars and you bought a lemon, then stay away from Florida state cars. But to assume Ponder will be less successful than Wienke? I do not understand how these players are remotely similar.

If anything, compare the Heisman winner to the current Heisman winner.

I don't see the big deal. Put Newton back there and he would look good too. This shows nothing to me (neither good nor bad). No pass rush no pressure. I like Gabbert and all just not #1. Heck I don't even see him as a 1st round QB.

I may be biased and all but if we are going QB at #1 I got to go Newton. He actually has shown to be able to handle the pressure something Gabbert seemed to fold under. Wouldn't surprise me if we look back at this draft and it turns into a Manning/Leaf type of blunder. Of course it could be Newton that turns into Leaf.

Totally disagree. Weinke was known to throw a deep ball with great touch. Given he was 27 and had played pro baseball, he should have had greater poise than Ponder and been more pro ready. It just underlines how hard it is to judge who is going to succeed and who won't.

You guys are forgetting that Weinke was getting sacked every other down. Not saying he was supposed to be good... The line sucked for him... he was screwed from the get-go.

Now that i think about i can't put a finger on why wienke failed?

He might actually have been better suited for Seifert's WCO than the Coryell offense that Henning employed. I remember his draft profile suggesting that.

Not necessarily saying that's what hurt him the most, but it likely didn't help.

Maybe I am biased, but I didn't want either QB. However, how can you watch the chalk talk with Gabbert, see how well he interacts with other players (Ponder) and think that his upside is not higher than Cam's? He is natural--not coached. He speaks from his brain and heart. He is SMART and shows he reads the d. He has never stolen computers or from friend's lockers, he has never been caught repeatedly cheating on tests, he went to Missouri because it was his local school and he liked the coaches. He was never in the middle of an NCAA investigation. His mechanics are better. WHat is there not to like? WHat is there that says, "Take Newton--he has bigger upside?" Gabbert is about as athletic as Cam is. He is smarter. He is cleaner and safer. What is there to discuss?

Really if Gabbert had thrown 5 more touchdowns last year, I don't even think there could be a debate about who to pick. Regardless of Newtons rushing touchdowns (which he wouldn't be able to replicate in the NFL anyway).

I think you are bias. Now I'll admit watching this makes me warm up to gabbert, but it also masks his flaws. He looks great in shorts throwing against air, his real problem was throwing against the pass rush. Gabby gets happy feet and bails on The pocket to soon.

Gabbert is nowhere near as athletic as newton. Yes they had similar 40 times but if look at all of the drills cam beats gab in all. If you look at them on the move gab looks stiff and klunky. Cam looks looks like an athlete at quarterback. The upside that cam has that gabbert can match is due to all of this.

Gabbert has good size, cam has rare freakish size. The things cam does on the run isn't suppose to be possible in the body of a man that big. Plus his arm is as good as it Gets in the NFL. If you as me who's more ready to start it's easy it's gabbert. Who has more potential and throws a better deep ball..... I think you already know.

Gabbert's lack of ability to deal with a pass rush REALLY concerns me. Name one QB in the NFL who is elite that can't avoid pass rushers (Rodgers, Big Ben) or at least stand in there and deliver the ball accurately at the last second (Manning, Brady).

No QB can make it in the NFL by panicking when defenders get within 5 feet of him. That's what I see with Gabbert.

thats what turns me off about him as well. he shows talent in shorts, but when the lights come on and guys start coming after him he curls up like Clausen. his pocket awareness is bad hopefully this will change.
