I'd say a smart move would be to stay put and

take Gabbert. He is the most NFL ready QB and flat

out better then Newton. OR the smartest move would

be to take Dareus he will be instant firepower on the d-side

of the ball. He too is NFL ready at 6'3" and 320# a human wrecking ball.

Gabbert was a one read QB in college just like Cam was.

SHHHHH....the Panthers are the smartest team EVER. They can totally find some moron GMs to give up their first, second, and next year's first so they can jump up to get Peterson, Newton, or Dareus. Man I love that the Panthers can outsmart other teams! We're the only ones that know this year's Draft is crap.

This should end the stupidity and ignorance of this thread. I'm just curious to how highland thinks we should go about trading this pick, maybe thats all the smokescreening?

This statement has just shown how little you appreciate the QB position.

I am not a fan of Gabbert, but to suggest that he only took one read and ran like Cam did is a touch ridiculous.

Really, because a lot of these draft experts are saying he was a one read guy, and you can see from his highlights that he already had his mind made up who was getting the ball even before the snap most of the time. I didn't say anything about running though, because Gabbert isn't much of a runner, but he most definitely left the pocket too early quite a few times.

If the Panthers decide to draft him, that's fine with me, but let's not pretend that he's pro ready just because he threw the ball more in college.

ok since there is no CBA, can we please forget the trade for future picks idea. It has to be picks in this draft.

My Mocks is still the best :)

Trade with San Fran Picking up their #7, their 2nd and #11 in Rd 4

1.7 Patrick Peterson CB

2.13 (From San Fran) Corey Liuget DT

3.1 Colin Kaepernick QB

3.33 (Compensatory) Terrell McClain DT

4.1 James Carpenter OT

4.11 (From San Fran)Vincent Brown WR

5.1 Julius Thomas TE

6.1 Cliff Matthews DT

6.38 (Compensatory) BPA

so you dont want a QB this year cause they will not be good in the next 2 years but you want us to draft a rookie QB next year? how does that make sense?

Because the QB's in this draft are crap....none would even be in the top half of the first round in a normal year.

The crop of QB's looks much stronger next year.

You don't draft the best crappy QB at #1....you take another position and make a move on QB at a later date.

let's divert the thread then, shall we?

What do you think of Niles Paul? I took him for the Bears in the 5th round of our fantasy mock draft...

If he can get more consistent with his hands, do you think he has a future in the league?

Probably the biggest feast or famine guy we've had in Lincoln in a decade. All the talent in the world, incredible work ethic (has a David Boston type physique, was a team leader as soon as his sophomore year), and probably the best skill position player to come out of Nebraska since Crouch back in 1998. Hard to look at his production numbers in college because we ran such a pitiful offense his junior and senior seasons, but he was undoubtedly our homerun threat on offense and a real weapon on special teams as a kick and punt returner. The knock on him is his hands, but he's one of those guys that can make the over-the-middle circus catch one play and drop the sure thing the next time he's thrown to. I think he ran in the low 4.5s at the combine, and at one point he was considered the top Senior WR going into the draft. It also cannot be understated that I do not think he was ever coached in 4 years. We just fired Ted Gilmore (now at Southern Cal lol) who was his position coach and is just flat out terrible and pretty much squandered all the talent in the world while he was here. I hate him. If Paul turns out to be a good pro, it wouldn't shock me considering what a twit Gilmore is.

Anyways, Paul is also terribly prone to unexplanable lapses in judgement (ie. fumbles, backward laterals, dropping passes wide open in the flat) that earned him the nickname F*ckYouNilesPaul by the student section. He talked to the media a bit too much for most fans' liking, especially when we went through our rough patch back in November, but all in all, I think he's going to be a solid pro, perhaps a ST standout, and if he's available in the 4th round, he'd be a good pick.

I pointed out I wasn't a fan of Gabbert, so this isn't me anointing him as a perfect prospect.

The major difference is that if that read wasn't there, Cam was leaving and looking to run, whereas Gabbert keeps his eyes downfield to look to throw. You are also talking about receiver progressions, where it's pretty much acknowledged that Gabbert is very good with pre-snap reads, in contrast to Cam who is not.

The term 'one-read' is often lobbied around, but it can mean several different things depending on the person using it.

It's instincts and the way they play the game. I have genuine doubts you will coach out Newton's instinct to bail and run when under pressure.

Dude, Newton was criticized in HS for not running enough, so running first is not his "instinct", it was what he was coached to do at Auburn.

And FTR, both QB's can and have made more than one read in games. The difference between the two, is that some folks refuse to believe that Cam has the brains to chew gum and walk at the same time, much less read a defense.
