From Yasinskas: Panthers Mailbag

Kashaud in Oxford writes: If The Panthers Franchise Julius Pepper and get a 1st Rounder. Should they look forward to get a QB in the first round, or should they just stick to getting a replacement for Peppers?

Pat Yasinskas: If the Panthers do end up with a first-round pick, I strongly suspect they'll use it on a defensive end to replace Julius Peppers. I know a lot of fans are down on quarterback Jake Delhomme and I understand that. However, I know the philosophy of coach John Fox and Marty Hurney and they strongly believe it takes too long to develop a rookie quarterback. Do you really want to see a rookie take over a 12-4 team? That's a scenario that usually (Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco were major exceptions) leads to a step back.

I think he is the only QB worth taking in the first round this year.

The only bad thing about it is underclassmen have a worse track record going out early at QB.

Like Matt Ryan, Stafford ran a pro style offense in college, so I definitely think that will help him. He has plenty of experience too, just not the 4 year variety.

From Yasinskas: Panthers Mailbag

Don't know if you're agreeing with Pat, but to respond to the quote:

I'm not suggesting Stafford come in and start, but it's best to start grooming someone now than to wait until Jake's contract expires(after the coming extension) or Jake getting hurt.

BTW: I'm not counting out more or anything, but it's best not to put all your eggs in one basket.

Also, whens the last time a 1st round DE(excluding Mario Williams) came in and had a big big impact? Yeah that's right, Julius Peppers/Javon Kearse.

The DE class over the years has grown steadily weak.

I think Stafford has more picks than TD's his junior year.

He was a very weak leader on a Georgia team that played soft all season.

His pick/TD ration isn't that spiffy this past season either.

No thanks.

errr WHAT?

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/player/profile?playerId=183518

and Ryans http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/player/profile?playerId=146254

Stafford had 5 less TD's in 1 less year than Ryan.........and 2,200ish yards less.

Needless to say if Stafford stayed another year his numbers would have eclipsed Ryan's.

Doesn't matter whether I think it's a good idea or not. It's the guys making the decisions that count.

Yasinskas is saying that Fox and Hurney won't use a first round pick on a QB, especially not with what they consider more pressing needs. Prior draft history supports the point.

It does if you buy tickets, and go to the games.

You support people just because they are in the position to make the decision whether or not you agree with them?

So just because Bush was the president you agreed with his decisions just because he was the president?

It's a forum in case we haven't figured that out, not sure why your response to everyone's ideas or opinions ends in "i don't make the decisions so it don't matter"

If someone asks you a question or wants your input on something, it won't bring an end to all mankind to say what YOU think.

I have no problem saying what I think, but I also have no illusion that it will have any impact on the actual decision, nor should it.

The last thing I'd ever want is a coach or GM who seriously listens to input from any fan, me included.

stafford was throwing to massoquoi, green, pope, and handing the ball off to Knowshon Moreno.

Ryan was playing with a bunch of guys from the stands named dave.
