"One of them has to go to Carolina at #1" Mayock on QBs

We could draft Cam and he could only be a Freeman caliber QB in 2 years(clearly not the best in the game but very solid).

Which pick do you think would make Carolina better? Cam imo would make this team signicantly better. QB is too important and we got squat. Easy call. That is why QBs normally go #1.

Or he could be like Russel, Smith, Couch, etc and be a miserable selection fro the Franchise and we could still be trying to recover 6-8 years down the line

And how many of those guys at #1 were worth it?(/QUOTE)

I sure hope we don't base any decision on what another team's previous mistakes were.

DTs have had the same bust rate as QBs, so should we pass on those guys too. You have to make your evaluations on the CURRENT players and pull the trigger if you believe in one.

You missed the point.

QBs bust very often, based on the last 10 picked, only 2 have rings, the second tier guys only have 2 playoff wins combined in 18 years combined, and the rest were flat out terrible (save Bradford)

You have that knowledge in the back of your mind, it's very tough to pick a QB number 1 overall, and they fail quite often.

Now we are in the present. We want to pick a QB. We know the history. THEN ADD IN THE FACT THAT THE QB AT THE TOP IS A COMPLETE PROJECT AND WOULD HAVE TO BE TAUGHT MANY OF THE BASICS OF PLAYING QB AND YOU HAVE A RECIPE FOR EVEN MORE FAIL. If QBs who were regarded as locks at #1 have failed miserably, what makes you think a player that most experts consider out of the top 20 in terms of talent is going to succeed at #1?

Some??? You mean most

I would love to have Palmer and Sanchez, but it's not happening.

I think it'll be Volek, Moore, JC, and Pike/late rookie

The best 3 will stay

The best will start

profit

My God, you argue so passionately against Cam Newton, but this is your plan for success?

I can't even take you seriously anymore.

The mindset which has gotten this franchise to the point it is at, and an issue at the QB position for some time now. Lets just keep passing on first round QB's for position players, and magically we will somehow end up with and get a franchise guy.

You don't just take any QB just because you are in the first round though, that's retarded at best. If Luck was there, sure you take him, but he's not and none of these other guys are worth the gamble.

Clausen may still pan out to be great and Moore still has time to show his ceiling.

Drafting yet another project would do nothing for this team this year or in the near future.

Yes because what I think will happen and what MY PLAN for success is are the same thing huh?

So then you think the Panthers brass are all idiots, but you're a genius who would figure out a way to get Sanchez or Palmer? What the hell is your point here?

1st round quarterbacks bust at the same rate at DEs and DTs so really if you would pick Dareus or Fairley you have no more assurance they will make it than a quarterback. As for receiver, look no further than Dez Bryant to decide that no matter the talent, there is more to success than simply talent.

As for Peterson, The adage holds true: You can fix stupid.

For those folks decrying a quarterback in favor of other positions, there is no sure fire guarantee at any position in this draft. Every player has their issues. The fact that we are considering a CB at number 1 isn't him being fantastic so much as the best of the rest.

At this point there is nothing out there to dissuade me from still looking at QB in the first. A review of the likely free agents and our current roster is depressing indeed. I can't imagine looking towards Volek a 34 year old never was, Moore a 5th year huge question mark, Clausen who was the worse starting quarterback in the league and Pike who is no further along than he was as a rookie last year as our best options. People who think these guys can do anything at all have crossed the line from optimistic to borderline delusional.

No wonder Smith wants out. With that group there is little hope for success.

If Qbs and DTs bust at the same rate, why not get the better overall player to try and decrease the chances of him busting? Why take on MORE risk by drafting a complete project? You are asking for failure when you do that, right?

I'd say Smith is happy with Moore at the helm and he's shown it through his actions in the past.
