"One of them has to go to Carolina at #1" Mayock on QBs

The more I read the quote, the more I think he's trying to convince himself of that even though he doesn't believe it.

Kind of like:

"Clausen HAS to be better than he showed last year, right guys? Guys?"

One of them just HAS to come to Carolina, they just have to!

Whatever the outcome is, it's probably best to take 3-4 days off from the Huddle during that time.

I'm not sure it's actually possible to post on the huddle during draft day. It's like the server dies from exhaustion.

this concerns me because out of all experts/analysts/insiders/etc, Mayock is my favorite and usually knows his stuff.

who does he have listed at the best QB in the draft, if anyone knows?

Gabbert...

He has Newton below Locker but fully expects Newton to go above Locker.

I keep seeing the idea of smokescreen, smokescreen, smokescreen used for the Panthers pick.

There's only two reasons that a team would give out misleading info. 1) so that another team doesn't trade in front of you and take your player. 2) To try and entice a team to trade with you, if they thought you (or another team) were going to take "their" player.

The first reason probably covers 95% of the time that teams play that "game".

Obviously, the Panthers have no reason to pursue this course since they already have the #1 pick.

Teams will, at times, trade up to get a player, but the usefulness of a smokescreen is debatable when you have the first pick. There are no runs on a position yet and unless there is an absolute, beyond a doubt, best player (who you don't want), tree is little reason for another team to trade up.

there is reason for a team to trade up if they become convinced the player they really want, likely a quarterback, would be gone before they got to pick.

this is why I point out Arizona. There are 3 teams that could possibly take a QB before Arizona. Still other teams could trade with Denver. If they really want Gabbert, like has been rumored (tho obviously it could all be misinformation too!), they'd have to trade with us to guarantee getting him.

that's why it makes sense for us to go through the process with as many QBs as we can and to talk about how much we like all of them.

you're right that there is no consensus #1 player... but this could work to our advantage. All it takes is one team to fall absolutely in love with one of the prospects for a trade to happen.

Here's the thing I don't get about the "smokescreen" theories. If they're trying to intice a team to trade up why is Cam getting all the hype when it seems like a lot of people have Gabbert as the no.1 QB?

Newton isn't the only one getting hype from the team. The team leaked that they gave Gabbert a playbook. Rivera heaped praise upon him. We didn't hide our private workout with him. He's coming back in for a second visit.

The 'media', on the other hand, is largely obsessed with Newton. Even those that don't like him much still talk about how much they don't.

Gantt has been pretty negative on him from the start. Don Banks had that story of them not "loving" Gabbert because of his deep-ball accuracy. You haven't really had that kind of stuff with Cam (yet).

The notion that the Panthers are "smokescreening" right now is a little off.

A smokescreen assumes that a pick is made already and we're trying to throw people off. I don''t believe that decision is made.

Regardless of who they ultimately decide on, the team will still listen to trade offers, and will likely still talk up prospects they've decided against because of that.

the funny thing is, a lot of the negative Gabbert stuff was started by Gil Brandt, because his stats line shows some issues with the deep ball. Yet recently Brandt changed his tune after he saw Gabbert work out. by and large the deep ball accuracy issue has been dismissed by many.

pocket presence, though...

anyway, you have had stuff about Cam Newton, especially around the Combine and Pro Day.

Our team will be better off taking a safe bet like Dareus

he is the best DE/DT in the (forgettabout) Peppers in this draft.

We have a QB named Clausen. The guy was a rookie thrown to

the wolves playing with injured teamates. He needs another chance.

If we absolutely have to have a QB (dumb dumb move) then get Gabbert

he is more NFL ready then Newton.
