How to buy a domain name

Do I have exclusive rights as long as I pay? Can they raise the rates on me?

pretty sure you have exclusive rights unless payment lapses (otherwise what's the point, right?,) they might be able to raise the rates but I wouldn't worry about it, usually not very expensive (i.e. >$50 per year.) If they do you should be able to transfer it to another company anyway. The additional shiat they try to sell you (email addresses, search engine shiat etc) that's where they make their money.

I'm sure someone on here can speak to this better than me.

I've bought several domains some from godaddy, you do have exclusive rights to your domain. If someone attempts to buy it, it won't even show as available to purchase and you can transfer it if you move to a different hosting site for your website.

godaddy. They have a WHOIS search right on the main page to see if your name is taken. They try to sell you a lot of stuff that you may or may not need - I registered my name just because some douche real estate salesguy had it and let it expire, but I am working on a site for something else that I can transfer the A record over to. Actually having my own web site with my own name is almost as douchey as being a real estate agent.
