Schefter Per ESPN Insider: Sources Say Carolina Goes Cam

Won't know what? Surely a scout for the panthers would know roughly how much the FO likes Cam. When I say 'scout', I'm not talking about Scott Wright or whatever.

They might know how much they like him and how much research they are doing on them but I don't they know how much Rivera and Hurney like him.

The scout might know how much that scout likes Cam but I'd be surprised if at this point in the process they really knew how Hurney or anyone very important in this decision felt definitively about anyone beyond what is obvious (aka we're looking into them)

You don't think they talk about this stuff in team meetings and stuff?

Everybody take a deep breath......ahhhhhh. That's better.

I hope he is right, but wouldn't bank on it any more than when an analyst says they are sure it's Gabbert or anyone else.

Given what Rivera said regarding face of the franchise, it may be down to guys like Newton, Gabbert, PP, and maybe Green. Someone that is going to be a playmaker. That doesn't seem to fit Dareus as well, even though he is a really solid player.

I think the scout presents their findings and Hurney says thank you then said scout leaves and people more important discuss.

This process will continue for a while since the information available will change up until all interviews and workouts are complete.

Bottom line: The Panthers do not know. They seem to be doing 1 thing for sure: Going into the draft with options. Trading down is their goal, which is why you are not hearing about 1 person. They are still looking at players. I bet Shefter does not know that Hurney was protecting Clausen on radio and JR was singing Hurney's praises.

If anything, Rivera and Hurney are conflicted and they are using the press a bit. I will say that if anyone knows 5 weeks before the draft what we are doing in this draft, they are lying.

I don't buy that...Hurney, and JR were ready and willing to ****** up Andrew Luck before he went back to school. It was a done deal...even JR said in the Press Conference that they would keep the 1st pick (which would have been Luck). Now I'm not naive, I KNOW that none of the QB's are in Luck's class. They cant touch his near can't miss stature. However, if the FO was so quick to pull the trigger on Luck isn't it conceivable that they like Newton (or possibly Gabbert) enough to do the same?

I think they know who they will pick if they keep the number one pick...and I think it will be Cam. But I also think they will try to trade back, which is why they are doing their diligence on the other prospects. No need for smokescreens, if they get an offer they like they trade back, if not they probably take Newton and walk away happy.

The more I think about it the more comfortable I would be with Gabbert over Newton. Too many question marks surround Newton's character and none surround Gabbert.

Having said that, I will be happy with whomever QB they take, as long as it's a QB. I'm about 75% positive that we take a QB by the way.

I can promise you that Shefter's source does not know which way the Panthers are leaning. You know why, because the very few that do know are not talking. Through the years, it has been reported many times that those in the know never give up any real information prior to the draft, and if they do say something it's always with an agenda. In fact, most "sources" are actually players agents who are trying to build up their clients stock, family members of players, or those that take limited info and jump to a conclusion (Gantt).

If you want Cam, I'm sure it makes you feel good that someone is saying he's now our focus, however, it's not real. Just like it wasn't real last week when Schefter said we were leaning Gabbert, or next week when he says it's Dareus or Gabbert again. There's so much mis-information out there that if you start hanging your hopes on it, you'll drive yourself crazy. Like others have already said, the evaluation process is still in progress. There is no logical way anyone can think Hurney, Rivera, and Gregory are going to make a decision this early...much less be so loose lipped about it that Schefter finds out exactly what they are doing.

No scout is going to say anything about what the team is really doing. If they do, and it comes to light, their career is over. Nobody is willing to risk that...at least not for the minimal gain he might get out of it. Warrooms are so tight lipped and paranoid right now that no team would want someone they can't trust to keep a confidence around.

Bottom line, it's simply not worth the risk.

It would be cool if we had like instant post translations for Newton threads. This would save alot of time just reading the same view only worded slightly differently a thousand times.

Example.

Mr Scot: I dont wan't Cam Newton. I dont wan't Cam Newton. I dont wan't Cam Newton. I dont wan't Cam Newton. I hate Cam Newton. I hate Cam Newton. I hate Cam Newton. I hate Cam Newton.

All joking aside, Shefter works for ESPN so that says it all, I just want draft day to get here. I got the popcorn ready to witness the meltdown here when we draft a QB.
