Schefter Per ESPN Insider: Sources Say Carolina Goes Cam

It's multiple places on this board that Hurney said no decision has been made yet.

Ur quoting Hurney as gospel...from public articles from a Panther message board.

Schefter has lunches and talks to scouts, personnel directors, Gms and friends of these guys while they are in more honest, casual moments..so therefore the word "insider" .....

So Adam should have said wow I got news...First, let me get on the Huddle to see If I am allowed to report this....nope... its been on her a few times that Hurney said no decision has been made...damn the thing I was just told five minutes ago..

That's just one piece of the puzzle

Really? Even Jimmy Clausen is coach-able who had and awful, awful rookie season in the NFL. Maybe you shouldn't rush to pass judgement when Newton hasn't played ONE NFL game.

Schefter did not even say "sources" at all. I'm suspecting many of the people responding to this didn't actually read what he said. He answered an email saying that he "sensed" Gabbert would go to us #1 last week. He says we need to create a buzz and get a good QB and #1 is the place to do that. He goes on to say what he's hearing he's leaning Newton over Gabbert. None of that says "A source told me the Panthers prefer Newton to Gabbert," none of it says "The Panthers have decided to go with Newton #1 overall."

Don't you think if a source actually told him, "The Panthers are selecting Cam Newton #1 Overall" he'd break the story? Or do you think he'd respond to some fan email with a "I'm leaning to Newton"? Blech.

I didn't say it was true. But Scot isn't the only person who has said it.

I will sum it up: Let these guys do their job..

If Kiper gets it wrong that is fine... he is right about more things than not and is paid to have opinions. Mayock, Casserly and the gang all get it right and wrong.

Schefter says the Panthers were leaning heavily toward QB and between the players Cam is who they have some feel for..smokescreen? maybe..true maybe but he reported it..and im not complaining about NFL info..rumors and speculation is most of what we talk about right?..I have no link to prove the last sentence.

no, he did NOT say he has sources saying we are leaning to QB. He said HE THINKS they should take a QB.

he very well could have heard from who knows who that we prefer newton to gabbert. that does not mean we are taking Newton for sure, nor does it even mean Newton is our #1 guy right now. I do not think any of this is a "smoke screen" I think it is just people reading into it what they want to read into it.

The Panthers have the first overall pick, if they want Cam, or whoever and have made up they're mind that he's the Guy, they don't have to hide it from anyone and can either go ahead and announce it and just say we wont negotiate until the CBA is done. which they can't do till it's done anyway so I call BS.

He said he was leaning Gabbert, but "after what [he] was told today" now believes it'll be Newton. Clearly he was told something by someone.

The quote is "based on what I'm hearing I'm leaning Newton over Gabbert", right after saying *he* believes we should go QB at #1. He never even says "a source" told him we'd go QB #1, and the wording is ambiguous enough we can't really be sure what as even said.

Obviously Newton is in consideration for it, but even he acknowledges how much can change, and indeed by his own recent flip flop flip, how much already has if he really has "sources" filling him in on this stuff.

I'm not sure what you are trying to say...

I never said Cam wasn't coachable but that is only one piece of the puzzle in terms of refining his skills.

I haven't passed judgment on Newton but have simply stated my opinions about his game, how I THINK those skills CURRENTLY transition to the NFL, and that I don't think we should take him with our pick, nor any QB.

If you have a problem with that I apologize I guess

What if we were to take cam this year, then a lockout comes and luck declares for the draft? Would you take luck?

If, and it's a big if, Luck is regarded just as highly next year at draft time, and if we have the number 1 pick, then count your blessings, because we will be able to trade him for a boatload of additional picks.

That has nothing to do with the choice at hand.

The Charlotte Observer's Darin Gantt says he's "never thought" Blaine Gabbert was a realistic option for the Panthers with the No. 1 overall pick.

Gantt is sticking to his belief that Gabbert-to-Carolina speculation was a media (and perhaps agent) creation, and that the top three players under consideration for the Panthers are Cam Newton, Marcell Dareus, and Patrick Peterson. ESPN's Adam Schefter has joined Gantt in predicting Newton will be the Panthers' pick over Gabbert if Ron Rivera's team drafts a quarterback.

Rivera created quite a bit of the hype himself when he gave the glowing review of Gabbert. This is what caused Person to choose Gabbert #1 overall.

Strangely enough, the same thing happened when Rivera said positive things about Newton.

It's almost like... the media are just coming to conclusions based on what they're hearing and feeling and the Panthers themselves are considering all their options...

edit: also, it amuses me how rotoworld dresses up Twitter responses so much, haha
