People afraid of drafting Cam Newton

1) those "mobile" QB's are also some of the best passers in the league. they aren't guys who see their first read isn't open and bail.

2) comparing cheering for Steve Smith, who in his prime was one of the best receivers in the league, to cheering for a guy that hasn't played a down in the NFL is laughable at best

...and character is a primary concern for a QB because he's expected to be a leader and the position requires 2x the amount of work than any other position.

I do agree with the OP that a certain amount of risk taking is required in order to be successful, so it just comes down to how you calculate the risk of drafting Cam.

Based on what I know, I calculate that risk to be too high, but I acknowledge that Cam's potential makes it tempting... I'm sure the Panthers are struggling with this same notion.

I've heard of people being afraid of snakes or the dark, never anyone being afraid of what their favorite sports team is doing. Huh, now that i think about it, I am getting the chillzzzzzzz

I seriously doubt anybody's "afraid" of it. There are just a number of people who think it's not the best way to go. And that, of course, is a a perfectly valid opinion.

You can pretty well count on it that those same people will get behind him if the choice is made.

It's basically a mindset. That is all I said. Those that took offense to what I said obviously saw a lot of themselves in what I said.

Or they just like arguing... which is ok too :)

As long as you weren't putting everyone who likes players better than Cam as the first pick, but instead of those actually afraid of those creepy crawlys then thats okay too.

Can we get worse? The answer is no.

With a supposed rookie cap drafting him makes more sense then not drafting him. If he was going to get Bradford money I'd be more hesistant.

There is a school of thought that says when you have the # 1 overall pick, or a top 5 pick, you take the best QB on the board simply because you never know when you'll have that high of a pick again and most good QB's are gone within the first few picks of the draft.

If you subscribe to this, then the real question is who is the best QB on the board and I think there is an argument to be made for Cam over Gabbert based on Cam's incredible potential including his arm strength which would seem to be a better fit for the kind of vertical offense we plan to run.

In theory, we could get "worse" by passing up on a talent like Dareus or Peterson to draft Cam, if Cam turns out to be a bust.
