People afraid of drafting Cam Newton

and so if we draft newton you would not be proud of him?

The guy who stole from teammates, cheated, bought stolen property then threw it out the window when the police arrived, got 12 tickets in two years?

That guy?

No, I wouldn't be proud and I'd hope my kid picks someone with actual virtues as his hero, like Beason, Williams, Gross, etc.

No one in this thread has ever cheered for Steve Smith ...who has assaulted people.

Two things with regard to Smith.

1. Only one strike in my book. Bright supposedly talked trashed about his mom and Smith whipped his ass, I do hold the Lucas cheap shot against him.

2. Smith is a fiery competitor who has a huge chip on his shoulder from always being told he couldn't succeed, still it never compelled him to steal, cheat, etc.

the Superbowl featured two QBs w/ great mobility.

Cam is NOT a mobile QB.

Mobile QB's use their legs to buy time....extending the play....keeping their eyes down field and making the pass.

Cam makes one read....then tucks the ball and becomes a RB.

There is a HUGE difference in the two.

I would hate to try and defend Smittys actions but I will say this. Even tho I'm not as concerned about Cam's character as some, but compared to Smith, who we all know is a loose cannon, his actions were quick, on the spot without thinking and after he cooled off appeared sympathetic. What Cam did was premeditated, and knew what he was doing was wrong and did it anyway. Neither are great leaders, but one is supposed to be given the nature of his position.

Both Big Ben and Rogers, who I cant believe anyone would even compare Cam with, are in the pocket passers and are big with athletic ability and can escape pressure. They were never considered running QB's even in college. It's embarrassing people in our fan base compare the three.

Although I have concerns about Cam's character based on his past actions... my primary objection to drafting him # 1 overall doesn't have as much to do with his character as it does my doubts about whether or not he can be a successful NFL QB based on what he did to be successful in college.

That's a lot of people.

1) those "mobile" QB's are also some of the best passers in the league. they aren't guys who see their first read isn't open and bail.

2) comparing cheering for Steve Smith, who in his prime was one of the best receivers in the league, to cheering for a guy that hasn't played a down in the NFL is laughable at best
