Why do players think teams will just let them walk?

I disagree. What makes you think having to tag Gross a second time is a good idea. He could not get him signed last year....can't get him signed this year....why would we think we could get him signed next year.

Let Pep walk for nothing and end up in the same situation next year with Gross....dumb strategy.

losing both players for a few picks = dumb strategy. The only way this turns out good for the panthers is if they can sign gross and tag peppers. If not it gets ugly.

With that negative thinking, how can you possibly think anything else? Of course what you are suggesting is dumb. Hence why getting Gross signed LONG TERM is the answer. Just cause they may end up having to slap the tag on him to get more time to get it done, doesn't mean it won't get done.

Because they're all egomaniacs and think it's all about themselves and no one else

It isn't?...

I am not an egomaniac, but yes I certainly would be looking out for myself and my family if I was in their position.

It was a joke, lighten up Francis...

I disagree. if we couldn't get him signed after tagging him last year, all of this season talking with his agent and now nearing the 11th Hour....we aren't going to get it done.

Transition tag Gross at the highest tender, Franchise Peppers non exclusive. Use the picks and free agency to improve this team.

First things first you can't talk contracts with a Franchise tagged player during the season, they just now as in after the Arizona game started talking again. It's against the rules to do so during the season if you used the tag on a player. You only have a week to reach a deal after the tag has been made, Feb 19th to the 27th at the start of FA.

Second thing is you can't use both tags in the same off season, only one or the other and only on one player.

Ah but I found where it is possible to tag more than one, I put it in the other thread. I knew I had read something about it being possible, not probable, but possible :-)

It is still my opinion tagging Gross gets us nothing. I still feel he won't sign a long term deal and we are still in this same position next year.

The Panthers are a business. They will, because it's what's in their financial and community interests, by any legal means necessary within their value system extract whatever value they can from what remains of their relationship with Julius Peppers. That may be a mouthful, but realizing that will make predicting what will happen with him very easy, unless the team management turns out to be very creative.

Julius Peppers doesn't owe anyone anything, except to take care of his family, pursue his own happiness, and honor his legal obligations. He does still have legal obligations to the Panthers, and they have every right to exploit that to their advantage.

I appreciate Peppers' hard work over the years, but if he isn't happy here then he has every right to move on if he can do so, and he can do the proverbial dodge of the spring-loaded door as he exits.

It's business this time of year, not personal. I recommend against making it personal this time of year. That personal stuff can come into play when training camp starts.

"losing both players for a few picks = dumb strategy."

I absolutely believe we should keep Gross, we need continuity on the O-line. Our running game was the best thing we had going last year. On the other hand, even with the year Pep had sacks wise, our "D" still stunk way too often, especially late in the season. I think adjusting to Pep being gone will be easier than if Gross goes. And to lose BOTH of them for picks, is, as stated above, a dumb strategy indeed! I agree with that statement...

It is not "negative thinking". I hope and pray we do get Gross signed (and it looks like that will be happening).

However, if we could not get Gross signed last year or this year, there is apparently a major disconnect in what we are willing to pay and what Gross expects.

If we tagged Gross and let Pep walk, we have nothing for Pep.

Unless we would be willing to drastically change on Gross, we would prob lose him next year. Under this scenario, we would end up losing both and getting picks next year.

Again, don't get me wrong. I want Gross signed and the picks for Pep. I was just looking at the worst case scenarios and commenting on them.

Well MH there is precedent for continuing to tag a guy over and over @ LT then finally signing him to a long term contract...Orlando Pace. I think Walter Jones or some other high profile LT was tagged a few times in a row as well. Maybe it was Ogden. But as a strategy, I do agree is sux.

I would think this is a unique situation since we won't have a cap in 2010 (IIRC) and therefore the details are taking a bit longer to work out.

Regardless, for those worrying about tagging Gross and letting Pep walk. How about we not freak out and not be so neurotic until we see what happens. Because you all shout at the top of buildings that this or that is going to ruin us and all hell is breaking loose, and then things work out great. And we don't get to see you eat crow, which of course, would make up for all the retarded threads out.
