Jim Harbaugh on Cam Newton

Honestly Newton scares me. Called a hater but I am really not. I just know my organization, the Panthers. What QB have they been able to develop from draft? What happened to the last QB with this kind of talent/prospect (even more some could argue)?

Am I against them at least trying? No. But if your track record is failing that is quite the project to tackle. I just wish we had more experience, some kind of experience actually developing a QB. Maybe Rivera will be the difference but in doing so he would have to be different from all the coaches in Panther history, not just Fox.

Sometimes it isn't a question of could you accomplish it rather than do you have the ability to accomplish it.

Josh Freeman?? He is one of the best QBs in the league why?

I meant a QB draft within OUR organization even close to what will be spent, since my response questions our FOs ability to develop a QB. The answer was Kerry Collins and failure.

Oh okay. Sorry. I guess my response to that would be, even if you haven't been able to do it before doesn't mean you should quit and never try it again.

We have a new coaching staff that claims they are prepared to teach as well as coach.

And I trust them to do a good job.

Fear of failure means lack of success..if the coaches want to teach they will bring in a QB who's willing to learn..not a stopgap vet that is already stuck in their ways.

If they are able to do it, they will have broken a 16 year trend.

That will be HUGE, but alas I wait...

Over 16 years the Colts drafted Art Schlichter at #4 and Jeff George at #1 before they landed Peyton Manning??

Should they have given up on bc of their QB track record over the previous 16 years??

Sorry I know we were all wanting another Newton thread

I thought is was a funny quote and I agree with him so figured I would throw it out here:

Of course there is some stuff in there for Cam Haters to latch onto as well so should be fun for both sides

Good, let his dumb ass waste years and millions of dollars on the Gimmick one hit wonder. I don't want this franchise set back further.

I know, I know. Your plan to keep this franchise from being set back is to just sit around and pray Clausen isn't as sh*tty as everyone already knows he is.

Or get some pooty washed up FA who was cut from another team bc he wasn't good enough there.

Or waste our future drafts to hopefully find a career back up that is secretly a franchise QB.

That might work too

You're taking a defensive side but I am not attacking. You insinuate I suggest giving up but the point was it hasn't been accomplished so let me quote myself:

Am I against them at least trying? No. But if your track record is failing that is quite the project to tackle.

It's a legitimate concern of mine involving the ability of this FO to develop a QB as raw as Cam. It's a concern not something I am saying they can't or should not do.

Not everyone hates Cam, and this isn't a conspiracy no need to twist my words. I am sure there are teams who have waited even longer for their stable elite QB.

Or a vet who already knows the system they want to run and can help with the teaching (like a Palmer or a Volek would).

I can agree with the "fear of failure" thing to a point, but I'll take an educated guess over a flat out gamble every time. No team gambles more in the draft than the Raiders.

And yeah, it's easy to say "let's take a chance" when it's not your job on the line if the "chance" doesn't pan out.

I'd add, as mentioned elsewhere, that I don't buy the notion the Panthers are afraid of taking chances. Marty Hurney makes more draft day trades than most other guys in his job, including for guys like Armanti Edwards.

The reason why we haven't "gambled" on a franchise QB for several years was that John Fox didn't believe in the franchise QB model. It had nothing to do with a lack of guts.

I'm so sick of this lets not draft a quarterback in the first round crap. I've never seen a franchise thats just happy with other teams leftovers and hand-me-downs. With the rookie cap all but promised, the risk isn't what it use to be back in the day. One bust in the first round isn't going to set us back 5 years as much as everrett brown didn't set us back when we"drafted" him.

The rewards far out weigh the risk. If there a 50-50 chance that this pick will have us set at the most important position in football for the next 12 years, why not take it?
