Yasinskas Speculation: "Real Chance" Smith is Traded

Mr. Scot

If he's traded, they'd likely want it to be to an AFC team. Also might want to look west to put Smith back closer to his hometown (unless he'd rather continue to live in Charlotte for his kids sake).

Chargers (Rivera connection), or Pats I can almost guarantee it with my non existent sources

I have a hard time with the Chargers for need reasons, but given that one of their reserves just got arrested a short time ago, I suppose it's possible.

Pats come up every time a vet's potentially being traded, but they already have a younger version of Smith (Wes Welker).

Financially, the Panthers will be so incredibly below any reasonably likely future salary cap that we'd have no need to part ways with Steve Smith or any other desirable player for that matter.

Assuming a CBA does not get done before draft day (seems a safe bet), then we won't see Smith leave unless he is demanding to leave. If he does leave, we will require immediate compensation with players in positions of need, and specifically not picks for future drafts.

The misleading and uniformly negative public relations press against Richardson and the Panthers franchise practically demands that when the new CBA returns, we will be spending that margin under cap on roster additions. Although it is entirely possible, it is hard to illustrate any reasonably likely scenario where we lose Smith and upgrade on offense at the same time. Proven WRs are hard to come by.

FA Offensive linemen that could be in the mix:

We could use Ryan Harris from Denver, and they need a receiver.

Atlanta (who needs another receiver) has several offensive linemen available, and honestly I think our DBs know how to beat Steve Smith. Risky, but a possibility.

Lyle Sendlein from Arizona, and they could use another WR.

There'd be more to it than that of course.

I have thought for a while that he would be gone, and not necessarily just because he wanted out. Rivera has talked about seeing how SS fits and what is best for the organization. Other people around the team have hinted that Steve was a problem last year with Clausen and before that with other young receivers.

It is very possible that Rivera just wants him gone. You can't develop a young team if one of your high profile vets is stunting that development. If that's the case he has to go.

I love Steve for what he has done for the organization and the joy he has brought to us as fans, but it is probably best for both parties to go their separate ways.

Extensions to Beason, Kalil and Johnson will whack a huge amount on our cap, considering all were still on their rookie deals.

Any attempt to bring back Anderson, or TD will also come with a few $$$ attached. Whilst we may well be below the cap now, we won't be almost certainly once the dust settles on new contracts. Add in a #1 overall draft pick, the rest of the draft class and presumably a few free agents (not nec high priced...) and you quickly see that you are wildly off base.

The vibes being given off are nothing to do with finances, so I think you have missed the point here. What is being suggested is that Smith might well want to move on, or at least expect too much too soon from this team.

I am not going to disagree with you, but will ask you to PUT UP OR SHUT UP. Let's see your numbers, and be specific. I've been using the USAToday salary information, and a few other more dubious sources as well where the figures only seemed correct to me. But this has been a matter of interest of mine for a long time, so I do care enough to correct any misperceptions I may have.

While I know there is a margin of error for each player's salary that I think I know, and another margin of error regarding what the cap will be when it returns, I've arrived at ballpark figures that I think are heavily stacked in favor of us making roster additions.

So let's hear it. Put up some numbers that total up the way you;ve illustrated (that the Panthers won't have much money under the 2011 cap to spend on new talent other than picks) , and if I disagree then you'll hear it soon enough.

New to message boards? Talk about an over reaction to someone quoting you

First of all I never said we wouldn't have much cap room left, I said we would be over the cap floor.

Second of all it's impossible for me to tell you what contract extensions our players are going to receive. That said look at the top 10 MLBs, the top 5 Cs and somewhere around the top 25 DEs for a rough estimate on those three alone.

Third, our #1 pick is likely going to be not as expensive as Bradford, but not as cheap as the rookie scaling.

We will not be under the cap floor, so Smith being traded will be a completely non-financial move.

:icon_bs:Yeah, that's pretty much the kind of response I thought you'd make.

What more do you want? You know the projected salary, simply look at the numbers of those projected extensions and the talked about #1 salary and go from there.

I never stated we would be over the cap. you said we wouldn't trade Smith because we don't have the financial obligation to do so. I was pointing out that we won't be struggling to make the cap floor like you suggested, so these trade rumours are simply down to the possibility that Smith and Rivera don't see things the same way.

Kalil will likely be looking for a Mangold contract, Beason will likely be using Willis' extension as a yardstick. Only Johnson can expect a lower than premium extension. Look at Bradford's contract last year, now it's going to be a lot small than that, but that will be down to less guaranteed money.

Im not sure what else I can provide you. I really cant see into the future...
