OH. NO. Things Aren't Looking Good... Rivera: Too Much Blame On Clausen

He is simply increasing Clausen's trade value by this statement.

Yep. He may have bumped Clausen's value up from a ham sandwich all the way up to a ham sandwich with cheese.

Clausen probably is shouldering too much blame, but any coach or GM that saw him play last year isn't willing to give up anything for him.

well, I agree w/ Rivera......put the only people who shoulder more blame are named Fox/Richardson and he ain't gonna say that.

but this

continue to evaluate the process and see if there is somewhere that he fits for us. And we'll go through and see

doesn't sound like a Clausen endorsment from Rivera...

rivera is sounding more and more J Fox like by the day :D

Nobody's trading for Clausen, and I seriously doubt the Panthers are considering that as an option.

This really is just an expansion of what Rivera has already been saying since he got here.

My belief is still that Clausen will get a chance to show whether he can be the guy or not, but that this year's starter will be a free agent pickup.

God I hope our starter isn't a free agent pick up. Free agents are generally free agents bc they stink. I think our "vet" free agent pick up is named Matt Moore.

Otherwise your best bet might be Jake Delhomme

It's hard not to think that Rivera already made his reservations about Clausen. If we go QB with the top pick, I don't see why we would not want to dangle Clausen out there to see if anyone thinks they can salvage his career. Clausen would be near useless with Gabbert and a veteran on the roster.

I'm sure we could ship off Clausen to a West Coast team if the CBA was in place and we wanted to trade him...on our team the only thing he is going to prove is if he's worthy to be a backup or not.

if a team was really interested in working w/ him for the future....they could wait for him to waived (which easily could happen with the next year and half).

Clausen could realistically be waived prior to the start of the season or after next year.........if you don't fit, you don't fit. A realistic possibility. I mean, reports were Clausen looked his best on gamedays.......Chud's offense could even be tougher than Davidson.

Seriously why do people think it would be wise to trade him? Not only do we not know how he is going to progress but if they were planning on trading him it would have benefited them to not play him at all last year. There are still doubts to Moore as well.

What Rivera is going around and finding out is that no one really gave a poo, lagging injuries were questionable, Fox didn't care, JR didn't care and that transferred directly onto the players. The players didn't care. So yea some stars like Beason love the game and give it 100%, but does that really matter? A team puts up the win, not any single position including great QB play. There is way too much blame on Clausen.

Personally, I like the idea of what someone said Moore being our 'FA'. I think Clausen should back him up and I think a QB should be drafted as well. This will do three important things that are a must. It would determine the value of Moore, possibly Clausen and it would let Clausen and the rookie sit and learn like they should be doing. Clausen should still get first chance to prove himself if Moore fails, and if they both fail? Hard to say at that point whether you start the rookie, but seems improbable one could not suffice at least a whole season whether the next move is to move on or not.

Another problem is what if Moore comes out of the gate exploding and you have a second rounder and first overall sitting on the bench. Stuck because Clausen wouldn't be worth anything without proving it. I guess the #1 overall could be trade bait but would you really give up a nice prospect you've been teaching? IMO I wouldn't mind if we simply continue with those QBs for the next year after that as well and hopefully bild enough confidence in a QB that Moore or the #1 could be traded or in panther terms: paid to walk.

“And I think he got too much of the blame. I think he shouldered too much of the responsibility"

From my perspective it sounds like Rivera is saying people put TOO MUCH BLAME on Clausen. As in, it wasn't all his fault. Which it wasn't.

I'm not endorsing Clausen, but I'm not saying the season tanked because of him. He was a rookie, he lost double trouble, had an injured O-Line and had rookie WR's. Not exactly the situation I would want to be put in. And then be expected to win? Hell, if you are putting all the blame on him then there is a problem.

But like I said, I don't think he's the answer, and I don't believe Newton or Gabbert is the answer ether. To use a pick this season on a minor upgrade with "upside" wouldn't exactly appeal to me. But whatever the FO finds best for the team.

I think Rivera is just being a nice guy by his response....but like he always does, he makes sure he chimes in "we will have to see if there is somewhere he fits in". Rivera seems to be PC....but he seems FAR from a Clausen fan or a believer that something is there.

    • I mean that’s not an argument I go with… But in ACC play, both Clemson and SMU covered the spread more than Miami.  Miami didn’t cover in 3 games.
