Under NO circumstances should the Panthers tag Gross

thats stupid... you want to risk the o-line (our running game anyone) by completely shuffling it? Hangman isn't a very good G if you hadn't noticed..

If gross walks there is no way they shuffle it....

We can draft a damn guard in the 2nd round if need be. Bottom line offer fair market to Gross, if he takes it fine, if not fine.

The tag needs to go on Peppers who will garner us more picks.

The Panthers tried to give Gross a contract last year and couldn't so they tagged him. It sounds like they have been trying to sign him ever since and for whatever reason it has not happened. Gross keeps saying he wants to stay with the Panthers but I am beginning to wonder if this is just talk.

I am also wondering:

Was Gross successful at LT this year because a healthy Wharton was at LG? Maybe Gross was good at LT this year because the Panthers got better at Center, RG, LG and RT this year. Maybe the Panthers value Gross but not as much as Gross thinks he should be valued. Prior to this last season, Gross was an average at best LT. The Panthers can't let Peppers walk without getting at least a 1st round in return so he needs to be tagged. If they don't sign Gross, then they will just have to replace him. Not ideal, but I don't think they have a choice.

Yes, it was a very good post. I do tend to think that Jordon Gross is being sincere about his desire to remain with the Panthers, it's just a matter of getting the right stipulations in the contract. Don't know that, just feel that. I think it's more a matter of guaranteed money or length of contract that is the tie up.

They need to just swallow hard, buck up and give the man what he wants as much as it might hurt. Then franchise and entertain bidders in the Peppers sweepstakes...

:banghead:

If you're saying we should just let Gross walk, then you should be banging your head in the wall, might knock some sense in you... :D I can agree that Wharton beside him might have made him a better LT, but he was a better LT last year and we need to keep him at all costs. If we don't, somebody will and we will not be as good. We have a running game that is one of the best in the league. I'm not willing to screw with it...

Screw with our run game?

You are willing to 'save' our run game for 1 year, only to be put into the same situation again next year?

If he didn't sign last year, doesn't sign this year, what in the hell makes you think he will sign next year?

The Panthers could be saving the defense with those potential picks, thereby nullifying the need for the run game to be that smidgen better.

Franchise Peppers period.

We have to get compensation for him, the loss of Gross will not be a huge as the losing of Peppers and getting nothing.

Sorry, I don't think any player is a "keep at all costs" player. Reasonable cost? Absolutely. All costs? Not if it was Peyton Manning.

When I say, "keep at all costs" I certainly mean within reason. I thought that would be understood, but I understand why you might have thought not...

When I say, "screw with our run game", I said sign him, long term. So that doesn't mean we're in the same scenario next year and the year after. Please try to re-read and understand...

Did you?

How can I re-read something you never put?

The only thing you said was you think the only thing holding up a long term contract was getting the right "stipulations".

Nothing you put says "sign him to a long term contract, so we are not in the same scenario next year and the year after".

You put that you think length of contract is one of those "right stipulations". How do you know he wants a long term contract, he may want a short sweet pay day.

And anyways if it is a matter of finding the right stipulations, then the Panthers are offering him a fair deal, and it would appear to be more on him than the organization.

last year it wasn't about the money with gross, this year I'd say it is. He was voted all-pro and to the probowl. That automatically given the climate of the nfl a top paid contract for his position. Were talking about 60 - 70 million over 6 years with around 30 or so million guaranteed. Also stipulations are a big part of contract talk, signing bonuses, too much back loaded, non trade clauses and so forth. there might be something in the contract that the panthers offered that he doesn't like.
