Ron Rivera insists Ryan Mallett still in mix for top overall pick

Keep in mind there are some media scouts who would tell you that Newton and Gabbert aren't good enough for the first round either.

When it comes to making this decision, the Panthers aren't going to listen to anyone other than the people on their payroll. And much as we'd like it, we have no avenue for insight into what they think.

What the team scouting department believes might bear little or no resemblance to what the media thinks.

^ I get that Scot but things are more credible when they are coming from multiple sources and aren't media scouts like the CBS reports.

But I agree with your sentiment. We could be considering him at number 1. Personally I am more inclined to believe we are thinking about trading down or back into the 1st or second round to get Mallett if we don't go QB number 1.

Actually I think Mallett is a slam dunk to be an effective QB in the NFL. Just a matter of how successful.

He reminds me a lot of a Drew Bledsoe who was also a statue. As long as he can get rid of the ball on time I could care less about his mobility.

My only fear with him is if he is a Jeff George or Jay Cutler type. And how good is his decision making on the field.

I could easily see him being a guy that puts up stats similar to Jay Cutler or Brett Favre toward the end of his career. A ton of TDs but ALSO a ton of INTs.

The other big concern is the drugs. If he is doing coke then he is toast in my opinion. No room in a person's life for football and cocaine.

But I also won't be shocked if we look back at this draft and Mallett is the most successful.

I am going out on a limb here but I still think (despite a recent CBS sports report) that he is gone in the first round maybe as high as 12.

    • If I’m putting myself in a team’s shoes - you’re looking at these prospects and Warren hits most boxes for a TE with a plus on most. So yeah, he’s a great prospect, no doubt, 1st round talent as a TE. But when I look at him through the lens of that PSU offense, they were running so much through him, I’m not so sure it was beneficial to seeing how he translates.  They were getting him open in the flat, running weird trick plays, and designed a lot of ways to find him on delayed seam routes and such. So a lot was structured around getting him the ball in creative ways to advance the ball, in steady sequences, methodically down the field.  Thing is, yeah he’s catching a ton, is big, and can block, but throw him into an NFL offense in a more traditional sense, he’s gonna be stickied by speedy LBs and big nickels. I just wonder how he is in a more isolated fashion— when he’s just a piece of a greater NFL offense getting shadowed by more talented defenders. I think it could still be great but I have question marks when it’s at the TE position. Will he look no different than other very solid TEs or is he this offensive centerpiece at the position that doesn’t come along often (Bowers, Gronk, Kelce, Witten, TG, etc)? I think he brings a ton and could be one of the safer TE prospects, but what I’m unsure about is if you’re really getting this new age Witten type people are crowning him as. Even if that’s the case, is that worth it? If he wasn’t in PSU’s Franklin/Allar offense, would you be seeing the same output?  More questions than anything - I could get on board with it, but it’s hard for me to really project because of how that offense was (which was so frustrating at times).
    • Twitter sources, but supposedly the Rams want him. He might actually go Round 1.
    • You aren't going to ever get him out of the equation. As he has stated previously, he believes it his right to make the final call on decisions.
