Ron Rivera insists Ryan Mallett still in mix for top overall pick

I don't think he's legitimately in the mix for the first pick, but I could understand why they'd be interested in him.

I don't want him, but I do think he'll be the best pro out of this crappy class.

Also, I'd be really surprised if he, Hurney or anyone else definitively ruled anyone out as a possibility.

Sure he does, he's got his poker face on right now... what he's really saying is: if you like Mallett, call me.

i don't see it that way. i don't think ANYONE is liking mallett enough to call about the #1. Now if they want gabbert or newton, and they know we like mallet enough to trade down and take him later, then this is to let teams know we're open for business.

You never know... look at how much did Denver gave up to jump up and grab The Golden Calf of Bristol :out:

I do.

Wouldn't be my choice either, but like I said in the other thread, what we see from guys like Mike mayock and Mel Kiper has no bearing on the Panthers. Their scouting department may grade Ryan Mallett higher than any of us think.

I think it is hard to believe for the number 1 pick. I think this is for a situation we trade down or trade back into the second round if he is available and we don't pick a QB number 1.

You may be right but it is hard to believe when there are reports out there like this:

Per CBS Sports:

"Multiple sources inside the league" tell CBSSports.com that Arkansas QB Ryan Mallett is viewed as no better than a borderline first-round prospect.

Mallett is "very much fighting just to stay in the first round," the sources say. Panthers coach Ron Rivera recently suggested Mallett was one of his team's targets at No. 1 overall, but the coachspeak can't be taken seriously. All in all, we'd be surprised if Mallett was drafted in the top 25.

I think this is bs personally and still think he is off the board much higher than he is being projected. But number 1 is hard to believe.

You never know though, you could be right.

    • No one is asking him to be Tom Brady. They're just asking him to be as good if not better than Cooper Rush, Jimmy Garoppolo and Carson Wentz. We'd like Young to be better than Sam Darnold and Baker Mayfield, but we're not even asking for that. No matter how you cut it he's going to be considered a bust for what was given up for him. He should be outpacing Cam Newton, Jake Delhomme and Kerry Collins game for game in their careers. He should at least be challenging the clutch level of Brady, Mahomes, Stafford, Goff, Garoppolo, Burrow, Hurts and Purdy. Remember that's based on the draft capital given up for Young, and not the extremely low bar Young has actually set for himself.
    • Even if you cherry pick Bryce post benching and ignore everything else and project it out over a full season….. there is no statistical  argument Kyler has ever been worse.   I’m no Murray fan as I agree he is more athlete than QB.   And I’m open to Bryce improving and support us continuing to develop him as this point.
    • We need LBs--build the roster from the bottom up.  On offense, we have Coker who has been huge...if you fill your weaknesse without having to use free agent $$$ or draft picks--win win.
