Source: Panthers leaning to stick w/Clausen & pick Dareus

the 8th ranked defense in the league, is surely not as big as a problem as the 32nd ranked offense, QB play was horrible

And brining in a rookie keeps them that way. I think Shula thinks he can save JC. But they will bring in a veteran--if they do this.

The defense is aging while the offense (aside from the line) is pretty young.

No way the Panthers "stick with Clausen." Seriously. This is the exact opposite of nearly everything else we've heard... The Panthers WILL bring in competition to camp and will not just "stick" with Clausen. He'll have to win his job.

Now, I don't think we're going QB at #1, but we are going to try to address the QB spot in FA. I just don't believe that anyone but Hurney (and maybe Cyberjag ;)) is sure enough of Clausen not to want a competition.

I love competition! I just think that Clausen will be a lot better than you do, and has a shot at winning it.

Check my earlier post in this thread. Even if we go into the year with the same three guys, I think one of them is bound to step up. There's reason for hope, whether we draft offense or defense. :)

Our defense was in the top half of the league last year in advanced statistics. The only reason they ended up near the bottom last year overall was because of a complete lack of ability on the offense's part to sustain drives.

For those clamoring for a DT we were 11th in the NFL against the run last year in advanced statistics.

We can always improve on that side and that is never a bad idea. But until we can put some points on the board or sustain any drive our defense will continue to rank near the bottom regardless if we spend every draft pick on defense the next 5 years.

Somebody said earlier that we gave up 20 points to the Bucs and that was proof that our defense did not provide a winning effort in that game.

To whoever said that I would like to remind them that in the divisional round of the playoffs this last year the LOSING teams scored 21,21,24,28.

The short of that is if you want to win a Super Bowl you have to be able to score. Doesn't mean you don't need a good defense, but you have to be able to score.

Keep in mind the rules have changes to benefit the offense the last 5 years and we still had a record setting abysmal defense last season.

At some point we have to draft a QB. This year has a draft with 3 potential franchise QBs in it. My assertion would be to draft the one with the most upside which is Cam Newton. He has the potential to be a Daunte Culpepper, Ben Roethlisberger, and Mike Vick melded together in one QB type player.

His potential and upside is higher than any QB that has come out since Mike Vick. And my feeling is that even though he isn't as fast as Vick he is a better passer right now than Vick was when he came out.

At some point we have to make that decision to pull the trigger on a franchise guy. Who knows when we will have a better opportunity?? In the future we will likely be drafting QBs with just as many questions as Cam Newton or Blaine Gabbert or Ryan Mallett if we are picking in the middle of the first round like we have been the last decade.

You can no longer win the NFC South anymore with poor QB play yet a good defense. The other teams in our division have too good a QB to try and stop them every week in a divisional game. You can neutralize a good QB in a one game scenario. But if you think you are going to be able to consistently stop the likes of Brees, Ryan, and Freeman from scoring points you are fooling yourself.

The longer you delay the further you are setting a franchise back.

So the way I see it, you can set the franchise back for the near future by not drafting one of these incredibly gifted QBs this year, or you can draft a QB. If he busts that also may set the franchise back for the near future, but only one of these choices give the opportunity to be successful in the very near future and that is to get one of the great QBs in this draft class.

Otherwise we run the risk of being mired in mediocrity for the foreseeable future.

Don't get that.....Moore is the only one that has shown potential that could be "saved". Clausen hasn't shown any real positives to mold....which is rare when someone plays the reps he was given.

How is the D aging? b/c of Chris Gamble? D is young.

I don't think any player in Panthers history has been hated more than Jimmy Clausen... Not even Kerry Collins...

I guess that comes with the youth of the franchise and the inexperience of the fan base... Ask a long time Bucs fan or a Browns fan how it feels to be mediocre if not just plain outright horrible for years, and then get back to me about how the Panthers are SOOOOOOOO horrible with Jimmy Clausen or Matt Moore under center...

Personally, I'm on Hurney's side of this one. You don't make such an investment in a player and then get rid of him the next year.

Bring in Newton or someone else into this situation and you make it worse. Say that move doesn't pan out... You gonna draft Luck next year too?

Meanwhile, while you stick your head in the bucket full of water hoping to pull out an apple, the rest of the offense isn't getting any younger or more talented, and the defense still gives up thousands of yards to average opposition...

A 2nd round pick isn't that much of an investment, and teams have moved on from 2nd rounders in a heartbeat before. Brian Brohm, John Beck come to mind. Hurney shouldn't feel obiligated to give Clausen another chance when their are other options to improve the talent at the position.

We've also been through this before a million times in Pantherland..trying to keep giving players 2nd 3rd 4th chances to suceed only to fail miserably..we need to start recognizing failures early and move on.
