What is this UPSIDE that makes Cam better than Gabbert?

I can't understand all the infatuation over Newton.

Think about it, it will take 2 to 3 years to get him to learn

the NFL game. We need instant production out of a #1 pick and he

will probably be a bust. We need to draft a sure fire player who

can start and dominate for us right out of the box. We don't

need Newton who is years away at best. Give Claussen another shot

the worst thing that can happen is that we will get Andrew Luck next year.

Skip on Newton he's not all that.

How did I know that when I saw your name Andrew Luck's name was gonna be somewhere in your post?

No one knows when he'll be ready to start. It can be day1 or his second year. I don't see him sitting for 2-3 years unless we have a Brett Favre on the team. All it takes is hard work and dedication he has everything else he needs. I dont where all this 3+years to get ready are coming from. The worse that can happen is we suck and Luck turns out to be a bust. fug Luck

There is no QB in this draft or any future draft who is gonna dominate the NFL right out of the gate, so this notion that he has to be an immediate success is just ignorant. And if you're counting on drafting Luck next year, that's a fool's game too. There is no way in hell anybody can guarantee that we will be in a position to do that, even by trading up. Nobody is going to trade away a chance to draft Luck, unless he bombs this year, which would mean that he's not as good as the hype anyway.

I don't believe in curses either.

What I do believe is that the college and pro games are very different, and success in one does not necessarily translate to success in the other.

I know folks hate to admit it, but when Real Deal talks about the important thing being having skills that translate to the pro game, he's right.

The other side of this argument is that Clausen was supposed to have skills that translated better to the NFL than Bradford or McCoy... yet Clausen was much less ready to succeed than either one of these guys.

The thing both Bradford and McCoy (and even The Golden Calf of Bristol) seem to have that Clausen does not have is that "winners DNA" I mentioned.

I was talking about at this point right now. Cam will not be able to come in and start right away because he has a lot to work on. Which is why I do not agree with taking a project player #1 overall.

His footwork will be much better by the time he finishes his first TC. I'm not worried about that at all. I don't care if any QB the Panthers decide to draft starts right away anyhow. In fact, I wouldn't have cared if Luck started right away either, had he gone in to the draft. What does getting a rookie QB beat up prove anyway?

I'm pretty sure Rivera's gonna bring in a vet to mentor Cam. Newton will start the following season if not mid-season. My prediction;)

I just don't understand why people are so worried about footwork. As long as a guy is coordinated, then he can do it. It's no different than learning to dance or play a piano. You just do it over and over until you no longer have to think about it. None of these top QB's are there yet, but every one of them can be, as long as they're willing to work at it.

Hell, if it's just a matter of drafting a pro style QB with great fundamentals, then T.J Yates should be the #1 pick. If we want the most talented QB though, then Cam Newton is the pick. This is not rocket science...talent, being calm in the pocket, and physical ability cannot be taught but fundamentals can be.

Darin Gantt is behind most of the pro Cam/Charlotte Observer propaganda. Reeves worked with Cam at the Senior Bowl. Funny he puts out this article the day the AP press released Gabbert's pro day results. He did the same thing last year with the great Armanti Edwards. Reeves also (basically) traded LT (Tomlinson) and Drew Brees to San Diego for Michael Vick. Hmmm. I would not brag about that.

Gantt is the poster boy for nut hugging. Sure, he found a former coach who thinks Newton is the deal. Since Gabbert is rated higher on many boards, why is he stuck on Newton?

Gabbert just had a pro day where he outperformed Newton with unfamiliar WRs (remember Cam's combine excuse?). Many scouts praised Gabbert. Many experts (former GMs, director or player personnel, etc) said Gabbert should go #1. Considering the Panthers have Gabbert coming in today, would a responsible, unbiased journalist not cover THAT story?

Gantt is pathetic. His bias (ASU, for example. How many other reporters make their alma maters so obvious?) is his downfall.

I made these points to show you how bias exists even in the press. Why do you think Gantt is biased? Good question. Cam is the hot star and his name sells papers. Why? Because he was the QB of the National Champs, Heisman winner, and the NCAA scandal. He is always a story. Gabbert stays in the shadows. Does than make Cam a better prospect?

They think every non-athletic pocket passing QB will be the next Peyton Manning and every athletic QB will be Jemarcus Russell(who's not athletic).

    • After the Chiefs game a 6'5 X would really help in the Red zone. I would also love to add Slayton in FA
    • But again, you can restock a defense through free agency much easier than offensive skill positions. Spend all our cap space on defense, take a true elite prospect who also happens to fit a position of need in T-Mac, and then use the rest of our picks on defense. Again, every season there’s a smattering of great DL, LB, and DB options in free agency, a Top 10 WR never hits free agency, ever.  The only way you get one is through the draft or giving up 1st round picks in a trade for one. If he’s there when we’re on the clock, he has to be the pick, he’s just that good.
    • It must be an early Christmas for JT O'Sullivan having Thielen back so he could put a coal in Thielen's stocking every chance he gets.  Honestly, the biggest surprise is not so much the anticipation. There were those moments here and there last year as well. It's that even that one positive quality he had seemingly vanished his first two games to where it looked like it was all but over, only for it to start coming back some until you get exclamation points all over this game film. And some of those throws were under a lot of duress, something I feel is something new. Finally, those deeper shots are starting to land. Not all of them, but enough that defenses may have to start respecting them. No guarantees whether this will end up as more of anomaly but I certainly hope it isn't. The Green Bay game was a sampler of what BY could be. Against KC, we got a meal. If we could start getting these meals regularly, we might actually have something to work with here.
