Something Else to Consider...

Yes, another Newton thread. Deal with it and party with balloons

We always talk about how Jerry wants to emulate the Steelers... well, the QB Cam Newton has been compared to most is Ben Roethlisberger. I've seen a lot of 'experts' say the offense he'll need built around him will be very similar to the one the Steelers have built around Ben.

Gabbert, on the other hand, isn't really viewed as a Roethlisberger type QB. He's more of a Sam Bradford type. I don't think this can be understated, TBH.

Newton fits the mold for what I believe we are looking for at QB so much better than Gabbert. If it comes down to those two for the pick, I can't imagine us taking Gabbert. For me, the only question left is if we're going QB or defense and considering the interest we've shown in Newton, I do think he will be the pick.

The basic assumption here is that Gabbert does not fit the mold because someone likened him to another player. Since JR has never complimented the Rams organization, we will not draft a player that is compared to their QB. It is also suggesting that we want to immulate the Steeler's players and offense.

JR likes the ownership and the organization. To think that we would go after a player because he has been likened to a player on that team is not logical, IMO.

Are we to assume that Gabbert is not a good fit under these criteria? He is about the same size, runs just as fast. His arm is not as strong but his release is quicker and his accuracy was better during the pro days/combines.

Cam's stock, although it may only be in the eyes of the media, is starting to fall. I knew the workouts would hide his weaknesses as much as possible and showcase his strengths, but the buzz is dying out. In the end, the QB, assuming we draft a QB, with the best chance of succeeding in the NFL will win out.

All wrong. You can't draft a player based on his talent and film. You have to draft them based on exactly what player you think they project as. Even with Luck in the draft, do you take him? I mean, Roethlisberger has 2 Super Bowls to Mannings 1. Do we really want to draft a guy with only 1 Super Bowl when there's someone else out there with 2? We all know the most important stat for a college QB is TD/Int ratio and wins because everyone plays in the exact same systems with the same talent around them. How can you not take Newton, I mean Roethlisberger over Manning in that case? Man, use some logic once in a while. ;)
