Pat Y was asked about Newton's red flags.

No one seems to have said this yet but I will:

You can have all the talent in the world, but if you don't have your head in the playbook and aren't a leader of men then you will not succeed in the NFL. Period.

You can't teach attitude, you can't teach overcoming adversity. That comes from your true character inside, and I don't see that in Newton. If you walk in and say "I'm an entertainer; I'm an Icon," then thats when Smitty starts breaking faces, and Shockey will throw some in there too for good measure.

When the chips are down, how do you think the Icon will fair compared to Gabbert? If we pick the wrong guy, we will be setback around 5 years. Just look at the teams who have picked a quarterback based on measurables and have busted: Couch, Leaf, Vick, Young, A. Smith, Leinhart, and on and on.

You watch Gabbert's interviews and what he says, and the video of him breaking down coverages and working the white board, then you know where his priorities are.

You can teach mechanics, but you can't teach heart and whats in your head.

My vote is go Gabbert or go defense, just don't go Newton.

Okay we all understand were you are coming from. But the truth be told Cam will be on the Panthers team and this is why. The panthers are going into another direction with this team. They have veterans in Smith, Beason, Shockey,Deangelo and others. We have Ron Rivera as our coach and just going back to his bears and eagles day and San Diego. Ron isnt a push over type coach. He is a hard nose Shut the F up why i am talking guy. And you will do what he say.If anything he is almost a near perfect fit for this team.

Also I was watching Path to the draft the other day and Bucky Brooks and long time panthers scout was up there and with his mock draft he has Carolina taking Newton number 1. And he stated some facts he said with Ron Rivera at coach he knows how hard it is to defend specific type QB's and having a QB like Cam Newton with do wonders because it is so hard to defend them. Brian Baldinger brought up a good point also and he said he have no problem with Carolina taking newton but he should bring some of Gus malzahn offense with him when he come and it can help him out.

I understand that you dont like Newton like that. But I think some problems with some people is that every time a Black QB come in the league they dont feel he can be successful. But every one isnt going to be a Brady or a Manning. But with the right team the right coach the rite Work ethic and the film rat and the gym rat attitude he can be succesful.

I'm so tired of hearing about cam's red flags. Vick did 2 years in prison look at his red flags he finished 2nd in the MVP voting. smh everybody on this forum is a saint and has never broken a law???? Point is Cam is a winner if you draft gabbert your are drafting another Randy Fasani, Stefan Lefors, a mediocre college QB. You cannot just 16td 9 ints in a spread offense. Please tell me what of his measurables is better than cam's?

Lol at guys panicking bc his background test panned. "But.....but.... he has to be a thug and an asshole. That was my whole argument."

 don't worry guys you will be fine if we draft him. You won't have to hide your kids amd hide your wife. You will be okay

The teams Newton has been on wins.

Gabbert's teams do not.

Gabbert also struggles with alluding the blitz.

Gabbert's stats in games is 6.7 yards...that, is a concern.

We already have Jimmy Clausen on this team...we don't need a taller version.

Gabbert, too, may already be as good as he is ever going to be.

I think Newton has explained that 'icon' statement a 1000 times and you know what, maybe he is an icon, who knows, the apparel company must think so.

Umm go look at Gabberts record... Sure he's had more wins than you think... Cam had one season with an extremely talented Auburn team... I cold argue better recievers, running backs, OL and TE's than Gabbert had... it's apples to oranges.

Where the is all this talk about auburn's team being talented come from? If anything mizzou's team is better than auburn. No one at the start of the season predicted auburn to finish even 4th in the sec none the less winning a title. If you look at the quality of players its about even, yes auburn has fairley but mizzou has Aldon Smith who is considered a top 15 pick. No way are auburn's wide receivers better than Missouri's. Gabbert has had the oppertunity to throw to elite level talents in jeremy maclin and danario alexander. Alexander while not a household name did look good in limited action for the rams.

So Newton passed the background test, does that mean he can play QB at the NFL level? Better yet, can he play DT?

How often has a DT won a team a superbowl? Because thats the way to improve the worst offense in the league draft a defensive player! but seriously this class is much deeper at DT than QB. we could pick up a starter in the 3rd or move back into the second.

what the hell does he mean "better when it comes to overall image" .....can anyone make a mistake and grow from it and move on anymore?

I wonder how many of the people who believe that crap, even remember that Moose was arrested for drugs and guns while he was a Panther? And he wasn't an 18yr old kid at the time either.

Pretty much any Panther fan shouldn't believe this. Especially with all the questionable things Smith has been involved in over the years. This is just politicking from the Camp Newton and Camp Gabbert people. In the end it means nothing as no one's input here is even considered for this pick, yet people get so butt hurt like the FO is going to see a thread that is negative about "their" guy and use that.

"overall image"=Southern conservative football team that doesnt care about wins and losses. But cares more about their QB fitting a "safe"and "familiar" image they can easily sell to their market. This offseason has shown there's more fans concerned with "image" over "performance" than we on this board care to admit at times.

The thing is, it looks like the Panthers themselves are finally turning the corner and trying to shed this "image" and "stereotype" about their owner and franchise. That kind of "stereotype" is bad for business in a growing transient city like Charlotte. And it damn sure doesnt help you win over fans or win games.

Whether you people want to admit it or not, there are questions about Cam Newton:

1. How many times will he be named Pro Bowl MVP?

2. How many Super Bowls will he win?

3. Will his Hall of Fame speech be sincere and emotional or will he be jovial and giddy?

4. Will the stadium be named after him during his career or afterwards?
