Gil Brandt on Gabbert's pro day, not so sure Newton should go # 1 overall anymore...

Just look at the film:

Newton- 30 touchdowns and 7 interceptions, 2854 yards with a 66.1% completions percentage. [while against SEC defenses]

Gabbert- 16 touchdowns and 9 interceptions, 3186 yards with a 63.4% completion percentage. [every pass was in the shotgun]

If you look at the stats from 2010 QB ratings:

Newton- #2 with a 182.0 rating

Gabbert- #69 with a 127.0 rating

http://espn.go.com/college-football/statistics/player/_/stat/passing/sort/collegeQuarterbackRating

I don't understand why Gabbert is beloved by so many.

You and your statistics! Also didn't he only complete like 30% of his passes greater than 15 yards last season? Tying to find that data broke down. Other than Bubble screens he sucks..

I completely agree with everyone suggesting not to put too much stock into work outs, listing the important areas (3rd downs, pressure, playoffs). However Blaine did have a better 2009 season, so it's not like 2010 is his only body of work, which contrasts with Cam.

Neither fills me with much excitement, but to just use Gabbert's 2010 season is as naive as expecting Cam to put up the same numbers every year. The big question is, why did Gabbert's production go down?

Also, not sure if this was pointed out, but Gabbert didn't have his usual WRs on his pro day.

Actually you would predict that barring injury, a QB in the same system in college would get better not worse as he matures. If he regresses you would say the same thing in college that you would say in the pros. As people got film on him and figured out how to play him he regressed. If that is the case you would put more weight on 2010 than 2009. As you say it depends on why he was less effective in 2010 versus 2009. From what I have read, there is no clear reason. What have you read or seen??

On Espn First take. Skip Bayless made an agurement about Blaine Gabbert witch i have been feeling for some time. He said that Blaine can be a good QB but its something about him that I feel and that he feel that it will only be decent in the NFL. Its just something about blaine that really worries me. But everything in the Nut shell skip and chris said if you want a QB it might be best to take Cam. Newton

The big question is, why did Gabbert's production go down?

having seen some games, my theories on it:

1) his receivers were different. The receivers he had the previous year and the receivers Daniel had in previous years were very good. I had thought 3 of them were playing in the NFL but I could be wrong there.

2) He was asked to do different things. With Missouri's defense playing so well the team wanted to have a ball control offense, but their running game was inadequate at moving the ball outside the red zone so they had a short passing game outside of the red zone. Inside the red zone they were able to create matchup issues because of the athleticism of the quarterback which lead to some nice running TDs (even for Gabbert). There's actually a quote from the Missouri coaches on this floating around about how Gabbert was fine with the change in the offense and would do anything to win. Gabbert's even quoted saying something about 10 perfect games and 2 horrible ones relating to his wins and losses, anything to win.

3) He really moved the Missouri offense well at times but, and this ties to #2, they often scored on the ground. Missouri actually had some obscenely high percentage of it's TDs scored on the ground - more than Auburn even.

4) He just didn't complete as many bombs this year as in the past. He had plenty of vertical passes (and was quite accurate on them according to KC Joyner's stats), but he rarely threw it >30 yards. He was very accurate up to that range (even 20-29) but past that it dropped off significantly, at least against good competition. To me, this is as much an indication of the offense he ran as anything... they just didn't have the same deep threats that were reliable at WR.

I agree, if you told me I had to take a QB out of this class I would take Cam Newton simply because I think he has the most potential of any QB in this class. I don't have anything against Gabbert but I think Newton has a better skill set for the vertical passing game it sounds like we plan to run.

If we do take Newton, I think we have to be resigned to the fact that at best it will take a few years for him to blossom into a solid starting NFL QB. He will not be another Bradford or Ryan or Flacco, but in 5 years he may be one of the best or he may be a total bust.

There’s a lot more that contributes to a QB's stats than just the QB's skills. This ultimately proves nothing what so ever. What was the two teams supporting cast like. What was the two Olines like what was the two WR’s like, running game, TE’s…….

When you look at the whole picture it will tell you the truth of the player. D. Williams ran for over 1500 yards a season at Memphis behind what was at that time the worst offensive line in all of college. That shows that D. Williams was an outstanding HB with great vision, speed agility lateral movement and strength for his size. People still say the Emmitt smith was a great HB, to me the truth is he was an average HB behind the largest and best Oline the NFL had ever seen.

I think you are stretching a bit. Plus Gabbert was in a very QB friendly offense.

That is a stretch. :)

btw, the way Newton finds success in this league is if his game develops to where he is more in the mold of Freeman, Ben, etc. I just do not see him having success leaning on his athleticism and his legs like he did in college.

For A QB, Athleticism in not the biggest factor. Their Vision, leadership, and ability to read defenses are what makes a great QB. For example Tom Brady 6th Round Pick. IT was said he had a week arm, he was slow, so on and so forth. Its things your can gauge and test at the Combine and pro days that make a great QB great.

So Gabbert had a good pro day... still can't shake the game clips that I've seen of him.

You do understand that the game clips are the negative ones and the whole damn draft is media and agent ran. Money and favors are thrown around by agents to ensure their client gets the best coverage possible. The higher the player/client is drafted, the more money the agent is going to make.

As all thing in this country, its about money. Nothing in this country is pure anymore. look at the BS we as fans are dealing with regarding the CBA. The NFL make over $9billion a season not including the post season and these greddy F#*@s are crying about more of a cut.

What ever. I hate baseball now because of their strike for more money... starting to get there with football too.

His offense changed from 2009 to 2010. He support cast changes to include his WR's from 2009 to 2010. Hence the lower production.

It really does not matter. I do not want eiother of them. cam will be aother running QB bust like so many in the past and Gabbert not impresive enough to draft in the 1st round either. I swear if Carolina drafts and wastes another pick for a Qb this year the whole front office needs to be fired and replaced. We drafted two last year. we need a veteran QB to help bring these tow along to see if they have what it takes or not. One season with an out bound cast of coaches is not enought oprove what we do or do not have on the roster now.

    • I think we’re evaluating them for depth. Pretty much every position on defense can use an upgrade
    • Nobody said he isn’t because BY got benched for a reason. But the discussion has always been if Bryce is “closing the gap” since he returned as a starter. Legitimate conversation don’t you think?
