I'd rather the majority of his runs had been scrambles after surveying the field. The fact he had such a huge number of design runs is why I consider his time at Auburn to be evident of a running quarterback, not a mobile quarterback who extends passing plays with his legs while keeping his eyes down field - which is what the names previously listed in this thread do... save for vick, who only recently started doing that.

I'll cheer for Gabbert if he's under center but i don't think he fits our offense well. His biggest problem is what we want to and thats throw the deep ball. I'll addmit he looked good but, I am far from sold on "gabrielle union".

He had great coaching and he made the most of the offense he ran. That's fine. It does not mean that offense will work well in the NFL.

Not sure I agree with that. He threw more than he passed all season. He had 3,000 yards passing and 30 passing tds. I think it is unfair to say, "He had 1400 yards rushing therefore he is a running QB.

just because you have a lot of rushing yards doesn't automatically put you in a running QB type cast

Newton ran 264 times. He passed 280 times. Yes, he was effective when he did throw... very effective. Obviously he can throw, but he ran a hell of a lot in college. If you want him to run 20 times a game in the NFL he is going to get destroyed. He's going to need to learn not only a totally new offensive system but almost a new playing style. Perhaps you consider "running quarterback" unfair, and that is fine. Perhaps "dual threat" is more appropriate for you but I do not see the way he played last year as in the same mold as the "dual threat" QBs people are bringing up in this and other threads.

So if hes effective when he throws then its up to the coach to determine how much. Our new offense is a perfect fit for Cam. A lot of people argue that his recievers were wide open, thats because the corners and safties were looking back at Cam hoping he didnt run and his recievers just kep going deep and TOUCHDOWN. That same thing can happen in the NFL. With Cam, teams could not afford to double Steve or stack the box. They'll have to let us run all day or play the deep game with Steve one on one, neither is a safe option.

But really though. Newton has a great deep ball, that goes without saying. However, his short/intermediate accuracy is questionable.

It's only a negative because of that offense we haven't seen things from him I would have liked to if I was going to take him first overall, and he didn't have to necessarily develop the same kind of passing skills that a quarterback who was pass-first all of the time would have.

Not that he can't do it, but he still has to.

The fact that he did what he did in one year suggests he picks things up fast and can adapt to the system he finds himself in. No reason to think he won't work just as hard to excel at the next level.
