Gil Brandt on Gabbert's pro day, not so sure Newton should go # 1 overall anymore...

If we get ether QB, I just hope we let him learn on the sideline a little while, even if it's as early as the first couple of games. We can't just David Carr a new QB.

Totally agree with that. Neither guy should be thrown to the wolves on day one.

Then we need to get a veteran QB and not be afraid to suck. Coaches panic all the time.

If we draft a QB he can sit for 8 games or something. If we drafted Andrew Luck I wouldn't want him to start from day 1. It has nothing to do with Cam or Gabbert

So are we going by pro days or actual body of work. I want the quarterback that can take over the game and has confidence and that winning mentality, Newton, the "winning" I mean "running"QB;)

Rushing QB's don't have a fantastic history in the NFL. None in the 21st century except Vick, who is just now finally deciding to pass 1st and run 2nd. McNabb has done well. But other than that Newton relies on his athleticism more than his arm, which won't be as big of a factor in the NFL as it was in college.

Or Aaron Rodgers right?? How did he do this year I missed it??

Yes, but Rodgers utilizes the pass 1st mentality. He doesn't need athleticism to do what he does best. Newton, however, relies more on athleticism to make up for the lack of pocket passing ability.

Cam Newton was pass first as well. 88% percent of his runs were designed runs not taking off running on pass plays. Plus he threw more than he ran last year. Do you even watch college football??

Newton not just a rushing QB. He's a dual threat. The coach put him in that offense he doesnt come up with scheme. He threw for 30 td and had the highest rating what more do you want. If the defense takes away the recievers and gives him a open lane for 10 yards what is he supposed to do throw it out of bounds (clausen) or run it for 25 yards. Freeman, Vick, Roethlisberger, McNabb, and Rodgers are great examples of how dual threats work in the NFL. They damn sure can run against our defense. Why can't Cam. If they want to shut his running down they can't cover Smith,Lafell,Gettis,Williams and Shockey while wondering if he's gonna take off.

I'd rather the majority of his runs had been scrambles after surveying the field. The fact he had such a huge number of design runs is why I consider his time at Auburn to be evident of a running quarterback, not a mobile quarterback who extends passing plays with his legs while keeping his eyes down field - which is what the names previously listed in this thread do... save for vick, who only recently started doing that.

Not sure I agree with that. He threw more than he passed all season. He had 3,000 yards passing and 30 passing tds. I think it is unfair to say, "He had 1400 yards rushing therefore he is a running QB.

just because you have a lot of rushing yards doesn't automatically put you in a running QB type cast
