Blaine Gabberts Mega thread

MAV what do you make of the scouts making a big deal of his completion percentage on passes over 15 yards?? Mush ado about nothing, the wide receivers, or Gabbert's fault. Honest question bc you have seen more games than I have. I have only watched about 5 games.

I don't think it's as big an issue as people are now making it out to be but it is still one of the reasons he isn't going to go #1 overall (or I dont think he will anyway, nor do I think Newton will as you know). I think a large part of it is his wide receivers, because he seemed better at getting the ball deep his first year when he had better receivers (and his YPA reflected that, though they weren't insane or anything they were better). Part of it is the offense and how it is designed as well as the lack of protection to go deep often. Still, his deep ball is not his greatest strength.

Also, contrary to popular belief, you don't need to have Russell's arm to run Chud's offense. Yes, the field is often stretched deep, but many of the throws are mid range. I did a break down comparison once on this and while Chud's offense went deeper than Clausen did it wasn't by some GIGANTIC margin like we have previously made it out to be; the greatest difference was actually 10-20 yard throws, beyond that distance Clausen was not all that different from Anderson outside of the fact Clausen couldn't get the ball in the endzone lol.

If he comes here for a personal workout, who's he going to throw it too? Are we going to tap Independence High or Butler for WR talent? Maybe Jerry R will lace em up one more time.

Ricky Proehl was previously reported.

There were just two incomplete passes due to poorly thrown balls. The other passes that hit the turf were catchable throws dropped by the receivers. Unlike Newton, who was able to throw to his own draft-eligible receivers and running backs during the Auburn pro day, Gabbert used receivers from small colleges who he had limited experience with.

i know I am being ultra critical here but two of the "dropped passes" were on out routes that were in the receiver's back pocket. Not exactly a stellar throw IMO.

But he wasn't throwing with missouri receivers either. If i remember correctly plenty of guys on here were dismissing newton's combine because he wasn't throwing to receivers he is familiar with. The fact he hit 47-49 or w.e. the number was, with guys he has limited time with, is somewhat impressive.

From that same article:

Overall the effort was a good one, so much so that teams basing draft boards on the results of pro days should now have the name of Blaine Gabbert atop Cam Newton's.

No pro day is going to change my mind. I'll support who we draft, but they're going to make that final decision based on private workouts we'll have no idea about. I would rather we go with PP, AJ Green, or Dareus.
