What about Frank Omiyale

so what do you call what we did...because we did not get otah to replace gross..

You base this on what? Otah was most certainly drafted to replace Gross if necessary, and not only because Gross was due to be a free agent. Gross had and actually still hasn't proven himself to be a stud LT. Otah was brought in to compete for the LT spot in 09 either way.

Projected right tackles aren't drafted in the first round.

If it comes down to it. I'd like to see Otah at LT, unless we could find somebody better if we let Gross walk. It was the plan at the time to move him there after a year, IMHO and put Gross back at RT, (I think he's a much better RT than LT, though he was an awesome LT this year and Otah wasn't quite as good a pass protection guy as advertised).

That may be one of the sticking problems as Gross wants to see LT money, but I think the Panthers always considered moving Gross back to RT and would like to give him RT money, which is less than LT money. That may be the sticking point, but I think the sticking point at this time is guaranteed money and length of contract. Something silly for the Panthers to still be hung up on since they can always cut him and be out of the most of it...

If Gross walks, the Travelle Warton is the next in line for the left side. Otah is not quite ready mentally for the left side, esp, with the killer schedule we have next year, and some of the defensive linemen we will face from the AFC and NFC East

No one knows what the team plans so no one can really definitively say.

To me, it's fairly obvious he's a RT. We finally stopped with the old-school, versatility over ability picks and found a cornerstone that fits at a position, and that spot's on the right side. We have a player who's started at LT on the roster that's been a good LT.

And yes, you do draft RTs in the first.

Or you have a need for a quality right tackle.

yeah, I don't know why there's resistance to that. Guards and centers go in the first, although less often, so I have no idea why people would try to say that RTs aren't more in demand or more talented.

I hope we sign Gross long-term this week. We need to franchise Peppers and let the show begin. I figure we will sign Frank to an extension as well. He has been a good back up with the potential to be a starter.

At some point you have to see if your guys have the ability to start. Having both Omiyale and Gross woulld keep us set at LT for some time.

Wharton will stay at guard and Omiyale or Bridges will play RT with Otah moving to left...at least that's how they will start camp. They traded a first rounder for Otah because they think he's a franchise LT. If it goes south, the tackles will swap...but I don't see that happening.

I dont see Otah moving he is a monster on the right side. Wharton was not as bad as everyone made him out to be at LT and I would say IMO he and Gross were just about the same at the pos. Still I like keeping a line together.

Move Wharton back out to LT? So instead of replacing one guard, you want to replace TWO guards? That makes a lot of sense.

Utah may make a good LT, but I already know he is a monster at RT, and would rather see him play there another season before moving him.

As far as the moving Gross back to RT, I don't see the point of doing that now. A year ago, my opinion was different. That was a year ago.

    • These last couple playoff/championship games for the edge class will mean millions. Someone will have a big game and become the favorite top edge. Everything is on the line for the edge group now.
    • Because he's not the best prospect in the draft, he's the best college player in the draft, and those are two entirely different things. Yes, if he focused on one side, his stats may have been better, but stats aren't what makes a player's prospects, it's their abilities and how they translate to the next level. I'm also not knocking him as a prospect, not like I'm saying he's a mid round pick, he's just probably the 2nd best CB and 3rd best WR, in what way is that throwing shade on him?  It's literally saying he's a Top 10 pick, just not THE top prospect at his position(s).  I really don't get why you think someone saying a player is the 2nd best player at one position and 2nd or 3rd best at another position is hating on them, it's crazy talk. Even in your defense of him here, you say a just asinine sentence, "he's the #1 rated prospect because he's actually elite at both positions" His ability at 2 positions has 0% bearing on his NFL prospects, as no team is going to use him full time both ways, he's either going to be a full time WR, or a mostly full time CB who gets 5 or so snaps a game on offense.   So him playing both positions shouldn't factor into any team's draft evaluation of him, if a team is taking him over Johnson because of the few snaps he'd play on offense, they're choosing a player for the wrong reason.  The only way I'm taking him over T-Mac is if it's a team that already has a true outside #1 and what they need is speed in the slot to compliment the outside guy (and btw, most teams don't have that, if anything, most would have the slot guy and need the true outside #1).
