Omar Kelly: Panthers Willing to Outbid Any Offer for DWill

I think Stewart's influence on Williams coming back is underestimated. Those two seem attached at the hip during OTA's, training camp, pre-season, season, post-season(lol), and everywhere in between. I may be reading too much into but they seem to be really close and genuinely enjoy watching each other do well.

stewart's already stated in an interview that he wants williams in carolina.

...and when carolina placed a first and third round tender on williams, that should have told everyone (the fans) they weren't going to let him go.

If JR were really interested in keeping Williams he would just sign him to a long term contract already. Plenty of teams have for their veterans. He is not being cheap but smart. If the RFAs stand up then he doesn't have to sign him long term. If they don't then he still has shown Williams that he is a very important pieve to the puzzle. He will still let Williams establish a price by going to other teams and will then match or exceed it. At this point there are some injury issues with Williams so it has to be a consideration going forward.

I disagree.....you generally don't want tons of your favorite guys to retire with the team........unless they comeback to retire. Most guys if they can play longer than they legitimately should.

Look at the greats of the game. There is a reason Jerry Rice, Emmitt Smith, etc. played for different teams. Eventually, players staying become a liability......very few like to walkaway before regressing.

I never said they were my favs...I just feel they are our best players who have a legitimate of going through their entire careers with us. Its really rare in the NFL, but whatevs ;)

We have a stacked backfield w/o Williams. DWill is older w/ lots of overall mileage....and missed a lot of time the past 2 years w/ injury.

DWill being a Panther shouldn't be a top priority....especially if it means lots of money that could be used to bring in an impact player at an actual weak position.

There is no free agent at any position that will effect the team as much as Williams.

Your posts in this thread are bad.

please, there are plenty of players that could be obtanied that would have a MUCH greater impact on the overall team than retaining Williams.

Keep Williams or let him walk.....the ground game isn't going to be much different.

The Panthers could sign a FA OR TRADE for a player that simply would make the overall team better. TE, DT, vet QB, etc......all of those positions have the possiblity of improving the team more so than keeping Williams. Bottom line is big bucks could be used better in regards to making the team better.

the only other post I have in this thread is that you don't want a long list of current guys playing out there entire career and retiring here. You don't want that b/c then you have Mike Minter's playing that shouldn't be on the field that last year or so still starting. You can also look at the all time greats....the 49ers didn't want Jerry Rice at the end for a reason. Ideally, Steve Smith will retire early or play for another team....you don't want a version of Smitty who can still technically play on the roster in a few years.

but honestly do you think a sprain foot would cause someone to go on ir? even if he was not 100% a 90-95% dwill would have been affective. i feel like either

fox put him up or he had something worst than a sprain foot.

Fox needed wins, plain and simple. If Williams couldn't go it was b/c he legitimately couldn't go....Fox looking out for Carolina's best interest in the long run over his best interest in winning in 2010 doesn't make a lot of sense.

honestly, don't know how effective a banged up Williams is. We know Stewart can play at a high level when hurt....not all RBs can do that.

fox could careless about wins i believed last year because he knew he wasnt coming back. also if he kept putting guys on ir that would be an extra excuse for him when other teams interviewed him.

right before they ir him i remember dwill saying he was almost ready to return or he was 80% ready.

The Panthers could of cared less about wins(they just wanted young guys to get experience and playing time)....

John Fox cared about winning.

His resume was the one getting tarnished.....and all reports are he took the W's and L's very serious that there were going to hit his resume when the Panthers started to rebuild with him staying one last year.

Fox obviously knew he wasnt' coming back....don't see how that translate into him trying to lose. That logic only hurts Fox's value. He doesn't hurt JR or Carolina tanking it...... b/c they weren't concerned about wins in 2010, they wanted youth to get reps for the next coach.

Exactly, but by the time they put DWill on IR, the overall success of the season had already been determined, and if Fox came to the conclusion that it might be a struggle to win games, even with DWill in the line up, then building a pool of excuses would have been in his best interest. Putting Dwill on IR for example.

    • I mean that’s not an argument I go with… But in ACC play, both Clemson and SMU covered the spread more than Miami.  Miami didn’t cover in 3 games.
