All Signs Point to Newton as Panthers' #1

More likely defending himself against Gregg Rosenthal...

Looking further at the “Panthers will select Cam Newton” story

This is how Tom Sorensen’s article in the Charlotte Observer starts Wednesday:

“The Carolina Panthers will select Cam Newton with the first pick in the NFL draft, or are working hard to convince the football world they plan to.”

We don’t want to call the article a “report” or a “column” because it’s a little unclear what it is. We can deduce that there is a lot of Newton-to-Carolina information floating around, and Sorensen isn’t quite sure just yet what to make of it.

you should check out the guys blasting Tom in the comments under his column Lol.

But I assure you Tom has a better idea of what is going on than Rosenthal thinks. But I also would agree a lot of people ran with the story as if it was a report which it wasn't.

Never read Observer comments. You lose IQ points with each word.

You mean like Newton? Newton has never been the #1 guy from the start. Usually a QB dominates the #1 pick, but this year there is no clear cut QB for #1...and that's saying something. Many mocks have Newton in the 6-10 range, so why people think we'd jump at #1 for him especially after a sub-par combine and typical Pro Day is beyond me.

Cuz we dumb. Only kidding but it would be a HUGE MISTAKE to take Newton

at #1. We need to load up on defense and if we still want a QB get a pretty

good one in round 2. I'd stay with Claussen for 1 more year. We did throw a

rookie to the wolves. This is the NFL not Notre Dame. Give him a chance.

Newton will not help this team and we will still have a shot at Luck next year.

Chances of us getting Luck is slim and none now. Sorry

to break it to you

Yes and no.

Should we base any part of our draft strategy on getting Andrew Luck next year? No.

But do we go into this draft thinking we absolutely, positively, no-other-choice must draft a quarterback this year?

Also no.

Wouldn't that be a no and no??

What was the yes? :)

So I sent an email through Panthers.com in support of drafting Newton and got a response saying that Danny Morrison wanted my contact info...

This should be interesting.

So I got the call back today. Pretty standard stuff, though I tried to pick up on any small things that might give me some idea of what direction we're going. He obviously wasn't going to tell me who they were looking at, but we did talk about how important the QB position was and how it was a priority.

I just made a post about the comparison between Newton & Roethlisberger and one of the reasons is that in the 5 minutes we talked he probably compared the two at least 4-5 times, though obviously didn't give any real indication either way. He did acknowledge that they were "disappointed" by Andrew Luck's decision.

One thing he did stress was that they really like the staff they've put together and trust that they're capable of helping to develop a franchise QB for us. Without saying so, I got the sense he was basically saying this wasn't the case with Fox's staff and that they consider the new staff part of the fix as much as any player(s) they're going to bring in. But that's just what I got from it.
