Panthers and Gabbert

Recommended Posts

Throughout the past history of the Panthers, we (the public) have had little to no idea of who they draft (until they draft them). The Panthers have hardly ever gone out in public with another player they planned to draft (with the exception of Armanti Edwards and maybe a few others).

We have heard them making contact with Newton, Peterson, and a few other players. But have we made any indication about Gabbert? The QB who many experts have ranked as the #1 QB and even the 1st player taken in the draft (by Carolina). Yet the Panthers are silent about Gabbert. Does Carolina truly have no interest in Gabbert? or are we avoiding such talks in order to keep our options open incase we trade down?

Some may agree or disagree, but the possibilities are endless, and Hurney/Rivera are yet to reveal their hand.

Two things:

1) We hardly ever have picked someone we had met with or worked out personally (with a few exceptions).

2) BUT, we have never had the #1 pick before. So, things are different...

It's been reported that our FO doesn't like Gabbert and he's not in consideration for #1. I don't think we have a reason to lie about it and from all appearances, we're not interested in him.

I may be mistaken with this, but I think we didn't schedule Newton and Mallet their personal workouts until after their pro day, and we met with Peterson the day before his. I think they are just waiting till they are at the players school to see them before they set up meetings/workouts.

If we don't hear anything after Gabbert's pro day, then I might think we might not be interested. Until then though, I believe you have to think he's in consideration.

I understand the whole smokescreen argument so I not looking to open that whole can or worms. And yes we have drafted guys in the past who we did not work out or even appear to be interested.

But with that being said we have never had the first pick in the draft. So what we have done in the past is not relevant to what is happening this year.

I must have missed something... when did we say we're not interested in Gabbert?

It said we weren't in love with Gabbert because he had a terrible completion percentage down field and wasn't accurate enough in general down field.

Thank you, didn't want to make any assumptions or baseless opinions without substantial proof on an internet message board.

Did you read the article in question?

Here's the quote about him from Don Banks (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/writers/don_banks/03/10/nfl-pro-days/index.html#ixzz1GiHpsn00)

A league source threw a little water on my projection of Missouri quarterback Blaine Gabbert to the Panthers at No. 1. He said Carolina doesn't really love Gabbert at this point, and doesn't feel as if he's accurate enough outside of the hash marks and deep downfield. Then again, with Gabbert not throwing at the combine, his chance to go first overall is probably riding on how he performs at the Tigers' pro day on March 17. Let him light it up there and Carolina's opinion might change rapidly. Especially if Cam Newton's game continues to be dissected, with flaws identified.

"Not love" and "not interested" are very, very different. I don't think we'll draft him at #1 but we're looking into him anyway, which we wouldn't be doing if we weren't interested.
