Console games are dying?

The video game industry is currently going through what the film industry and (to an extant) the music industry went through when they legitimized. The expense of producing games is now so high that few publishers are willing to take risks with original content.

that isn't true at all. there are more independent games and distribution methods for them right now than there have been for as long as I can remember. The big studios have all been consolidated, so in that sense you're correct.

True, but that's an effect that the internet has had on almost all sectors of the entertainment industry. I'm talking about where the real money is. While it's true that things like Xbox Live Arcade, smartphones, etc. have created a blooming market for indie games, the vast majority of console games published by major licenses are carbon copies of the same tested formulas and have been for awhile now.

I can't find numbers, but if you took all of the "major" games released in the last 3 years sequels would heavily outnumber original IPs.

yea i know and i hate it. the nice thing though is that in no small part due to apple and valve, the financial weight of indie software is gotta be almost equal to that of the larger game factories. we are about to see a whole new generation of independent developers.

New IP's are an expensive risk that usually doesn't pan out well. For every successful new IP there are a bunch that fall flat. It is difficult to get people to drop $60 on a game they are unfamiliar with. But it you liked the last CoD you should like the new one. Sequels are the safe bet.

This is why I never buy games and only rent from gamefly.. for example I just rented homefront and finished the game in 3 hours and turned around and mailed it back. I pity the dumb fools who bought that game and thought the MP is good.

The MP is good...better than that worn out sprint, spray, sprint some more COD formula that the masses love so much.

I think the problem is games take too long to get into these days. They are accompanied by pointless stories or tutorial modes. Then there are games that are way too long. Final Fantasy 13 takes around 60 hours to complete.

Back in the day you throw Mario in, choose 1p and start playing. You run out of lives then turn it off and do something else.

You weren't stuck watching some game developer born without an imagination but a gift for programming try to convey to you the worst story you've ever experienced in your life.

Ever played a Final Fantasy before? I would have been shocked if it didn't take 60 hours.
