I mean on a longer time scale, the door is definitely open for me to start hanging around the studio and hopefully grab some sessions after I learn the run of the place. BUT I don't know how long that will take and I have aspirations of starting my own studio. Seems like I'd be better served getting a good paying regular job in the meantime

Clearly the guy knows he can get people to do this job under these conditions.

I work recording live shows at venues around town. My boss is the owner of the recording studio and we are sub-contracted by a media company that does video and audio of the shows.

I get paid about $30-$50 a gig for working about 8-10 hours, usually until 2-3am and I always drive my own car with all the equipment. I've yet to be given notice about a show more than 3 hours in advance. I've been harping my boss to give me some kind of schedule so I can make plans. Today I text him and ask if he knows a good place to get audio gear repaired and he responds "We've got a gig tonight." I made plans tonight and told him I couldn't then he comes back and says "I told you to be ready all week" So now I guess he's pissed. I offered to come help tear down and load out after the show.

I think it's pretty messed up...no schedule, basically on call every day, but get paid sh!t. This is a "for my resume" job no doubt, so do you think I should cancel my plans for this job?

nah it's the studio's equipment, but I haul it there and back

here's a suggestion:

why don't you call him every sunday night and ask what shows he needs you for that week. give him one or two days that you're willing to be available "on call" up to a few hours before the show.
