Panthers name Brian Baker new defensive line coach

Funny thing. I remember someone (forget who) recently suggesting that the Panthers were racist in their hiring practices.

As of now, 60% of our defensive coaching staff is black.

More importantly though, reading this guy's resume and a few bits and pieces found from searching him, he seems like a good hire. He's coached on two of the three levels of defense - DL, LB - and was once interviewed for a position coaching DBs. That's somewhat unusual.

Final result: The team has gone the route of having a "technician" for a DC and "motivators" for position coaches. That's a mix I feel comfortable with.

I agree with this and everyone was raving about the Lewis signing when he came to carolina but you see how that worked out. I feel Fox and Hurrny know what they are doing.

eehhh so one of them Has direct ties to Fox and the other one to Hurney. Lovely.... There goes the outside the box thinking.. oh well

That's a minor direct connection though. It wasn't really a prior working relationship like it would have been with someone like Mike Haluchak, and the article makes it sound like the mutual friendship with Bobby Ross played as much of a role as anything.

Internships and mutual friendships don't show up on a coaching resume'. Kudos to Chandler for getting the connection we couldn't see. Wonder if any of the others have "degree of separation" type connections.

I don't think it's a matter of being racist, but certainly part of the whole Rooney rule and assistantship is finding guys you can trust. It's not that you can or can't trust people you don't know, but if you become friends with a competent associate, that coach is more likely to be a trusted guy down the road compared to a younger, less known associate.

Of course, Fox bringing on and making assistant head coach a guy with the esteem of Jim Skipper wipes that out anyway, but certainly Meeks being our first non-caucasian coordinator has influenced toward hiring more of his background, too.

That's why I see the Rooney rule's place but don't ever believe it will change the "go with what you know" attitude of coaches from various backgrounds, and why the minority internship program has done much more good than Rooney rule has.

it made them familiar with each other two decades ago. Baker having coached 15 years since then, Fox would have to become and stay familiar with what's happened since to hire him. Certainly Fox didn't say "oh, I remember you. You want a job?"

I do think it's interesting my candidates aren't signed anywhere, but I assume they do soon. With other staffs coming together slowly, I do believe a lot of things were waiting for a shot at our unit.

I wouldn't worry too much about that discussion. If I remember right, the person who suggested it was the underage nitwit who's been banned under multiple IDs.

Haluchak interviewed here but for whatever reason they took Smith instead. Gantt mentioned McGinnis as a candidate for the DC spot but we never heard any more about it. Looking more and more like he'll wind up staying right where he is.

Chandler mentioned that there were "multiple interviews" for the DL coach spot, from which you could extrapolate that there were "multiple interviews" for the other spots, but Haluchak is the only non-hire that was confirmed as having interviewed. I'd love to know who else got a shot.

Could just be that the team is going along with the league wide trend toward younger, cheaper, lesser known coaches.

one of these days we'll get through an entire discussion without you mentioning McGinnis :D Haslett was also likely an option at DC based on the rumors, but funny he didn't sniff a spot as an assistant, given that he doesn't have a job anywya.

Would be interesting to know who else did interview, yes. Maybe Krumrie did and his antics are a little too out-there for Fox. I can understand that. Once Board was gone, it didn't matter as much what we did on the DL, and Baker is better than Millard.

Our resident canine/multiple personality/insider had some info on the Haslett thing. He and Fox apparently hate each others guts stemming from some past conflicts. There was a lot of media speculation but I never took it seriously given that issue.
