Panthers name Brian Baker new defensive line coach

Baker has extensive work with undersized ends with high output (Leonard Little, Lance Johnstone). He's a quality hire. Lots of NFL experience, with some legit success there. Not unlike Smith. Milus, I'm having a hard time understanding.

FWIW, I've read a lot (leaguewide, not pointing to here) about coaching contracts and price, not just at the HC level (where over 6 Super Bowl rings' worth of head coach won't coach this year, and half the league has minimal experience) but at the assistant level. I don't know what that'll impact here necessarily, but there will be some high priced assistants not coaching this year, too.

Carriker shouldn't be at DT, IMO. And I wouldn't blame a position coach for that, or for whether a draft pick was a smart move.

Again John Fox mentions a coach as a "good teacher". Mark my words, we are going young, home grown so to speak. Don't expect any large FA signings. IMO they are having more confidence in their drafts with our new head of scouting and they will use that to build the defense.

We're probably going younger, sure. Besides the influx of draft talent, some young guys are ready to step up (Johnson and ready or not, here's Marshall as well).

I don't think it's coincidental that we're changing things up this much a year after our defense was this hamstrung over a rookie DB playing.

Funny thing. I remember someone (forget who) recently suggesting that the Panthers were racist in their hiring practices.

As of now, 60% of our defensive coaching staff is black.

More importantly though, reading this guy's resume and a few bits and pieces found from searching him, he seems like a good hire. He's coached on two of the three levels of defense - DL, LB - and was once interviewed for a position coaching DBs. That's somewhat unusual.

Final result: The team has gone the route of having a "technician" for a DC and "motivators" for position coaches. That's a mix I feel comfortable with.

ummm, A fox hire or not????? I think this leans toward an influence from meeks.

On surface, I didn't find a direct connection to either Fox or Meeks.

I'll look again, though.

Edit: As originally thought, no direct connection. Both Baker and Milus were hired by Scott Linehan when he took over as Rams head coach in 2006. Thus, I also checked over Linehan's resume'. No direct connection to Fox or Meeks there either.

Totally outside the box here :sosp:

Mr. Scot I am in an agreement with you on this. I have not heard one way or another on this guy but if he is a motivator. I am happy with it as long as the Panthers Defense become FRESH. The last couple of years we seemed to have been plain vanilla. It is a great flavor but not something your want your defense to be.

Go Panthers
