Hurney's Big Decision

I think Rivera has a lot more pull going into this season than many are assuming. Carolina is going in a new direction.......you can't do that w/o letting the guy driving the ship have a lot of initial power. I think once the CBA thing is resolved we will see that.....I think Shockey is an example.

Good point about Shockey...

Also with Hurney stating QB is a #1 need we have no idea how he feels about the draft no matter if he likes Clausen or not. Real competition brings out the best in players not all of them sucking collectively Moore vs Clausen vs Pike...

I sure hope so, because I don't trust Hurney as far as I can throw him, when it comes to picking QB's. He has wasted a lot of mid round picks on QB's who had no chance.

Im fine with PP, Dareus, or Cam Newton. I read the whole thing and am now regretting it. Who the hell knows if Cam newton will be a bust or a great player in the NFL. Who really knows if Andrew Luck will either? Because if you really do please give me the next numbers for the Mega Million Jackpot...thanx!!

Well if this is all Hurney's decision, then I'm sure the anti Cam crowd will be very happy because the Panthers won't be drafting any QB at #1. Of course, that may happen anyway, but I sure hope that Rivera has at least an equal say in the matter.

If the coaches come to him and say, Cam is the guy. We want him. I think Hurney gives them Cam. Rivera says he is considering several players. Then there are trade options that could change Rivera's perspective--if he is 100% Newton. I dunno.. Just wanted this to be about Hurney's decision and how trade offers could change thinking. I think Rivera and Hurney will be on the same page when the draft rolls around, but then I hear about Fox being upset about the Clausen and Edwards picks.

This is not another "hater/hugger" thread, and you recognize that. It is a look at Hurney's dilemma. If we get Cam, I know we might have something special. This shows how we could look at this as a 2-year process, add a second rounder, and still have something special at QB while giving Clausen a second look to make sure it was not the environment or coaching or injuries etc. I think it is the smart thing to do if you get the offer. If we had not drafted QBs last year or they had a chance to develop over time and still sucked, I would not suggest this.

Bringing in a vet, seeing if Clausen and Moore have anything, and accumulating picks to move up in the 2012 draft to get a franchise QB is a move. Cam will be ready in 2012 too.

We saw what Clausen has......he isn't ready. He may improve but you don't make the type jump going into year 2 Rivera needs at the QB position. We know what Moore is as well.

Asking Rivera to essentially sit on his hands a year before addressing QB just doesn't add up.....there is no guarantee you will be able to land a QB in the 2012 draft. So again, sitting on his hands and treading water to start his HC career just doesn't seem like a likely scenario.

New coaches go get new QBs unless they have a Superbowl QB that was part of the "leftovers". No reason to believe Carolina will an exception to that.

The Panthes had D.Will on the roster and then went ahead and drafted Stewart. Its doesnt matter that Clausen is on this team. If Hurney, Rivera, etc think Cam can be a franchise QB = they will pick him

Thats because you need a tandem of backs to be successful in the NFL now. If the Panthers organization believes that Clausen will be nothing more than a career back up then they go QB with the #1 pick and sign a vet for cheap.

yep, and they were both 1st rounders.

Clausen has a mid 2nd rounder who played like an undrafted kid. Carolina doesn't have anything invested into a mid 2nd round QB that is going to sway anything.

You can tell everyone you want that on this board, however it won't matter.

There are still people who refuse to believe that we need a QB when our offense was dead last in every catergory last year.

If Patrick Peterson or Marcell Dareus could get us 14 to 21 points a game by playing amazing defense then I would be fine with either one of them, however I don't see that happening.

Cam Newton or any other QB is more likely to put points on the board than any defensive in this draft.

Cam is a process that probably won't be ready to succeed until 2012. You have to think of this as a 2 year process as well. Either way, you get a franchise QB that is ready to play in 2012. It is making a move, but a calculated one that adds a second rounder if you are wrong and more picks if your draft pick from 2010 prospers like many QBs in the past have. If not, you use the picks to get a top 3 player next year, one that is probably more capable of starting right away. For those who don't think that is a move, they are wrong. It is a move, just not as impulsive as some would like.

I guess I am now a nut hugger. Even though I was a wait and see type of guy, you, TRD and Mr. Scot have forced me to choose. So I am a Cam loving, GED, close minded scholar hugger or something like that. So allow me to retort:

ROFL.. first you say in caps THESE ARE THE FACTS. Then you go with a hypothetical situation. You also go into "assumptions" on who will be available in next years draft.

Also just because Hurney believes Clausen didn't get a fair shake (haven't seen where that is I suppose it's an article or quote maybe?), he also says QB is an immediate need. So if you had a QB you believe in, would you say QB is an immediate need that needs to be addressed?

You put Luck's name as available for 2012 but unless we are "horrible" like this year, you can't honestly believe we would be in a position to draft him without crippling ourselves giving away more draft picks than we gained the year before. So basically we are left with Barkley and Landri vs Newton and Gabbert. So you probably could have just said, who would you want Barkley and Landri or Newton and Gabbert to chose from. I personally would choose Newton (now).

Next year it will be Clausen's chance to show what he has. If he can't do it, then in the following year you have to think Tony Pike will finally have enough experience to step forward, right? This all assumes they can beat out Matt Moore, of course. ;)

I think you take Newton, but if you have a chance at a good trade then you jump on it. But I also think that we could go into the season with no draft picks and still be better than last year. Just the new staff and returns from IR will net us 4-6 more wins.

I'll be fine with whatever they decide to do. The one thing that bothers me though, is when people keep saying that next year's QB class will be so much better, as if all the teams drafting ahead of us are going to pass on these awesome QB's, or trade down without asking for the world, just so the Panthers can have one of them. That's just not going to happen. The only way we can be sure of having a chance at Andrew Luck, is if we're drafting 1st again, and if we're not picking in the top 5, it will be pure luck if one of those awesome QB's fall to us.

The same thing goes for Luck though, Rivera says he does not like putting a rookie QB in a starting role so at this point we need a vet QB no matter what.
