Wilcotts loses ALL credibility when they are discussing the 08 Falcons going out and getting Matt Ryan by saying that rebuilding team had WAY more talent than the current Panthers. If nothing else, let's go back and look at how many Falcons were in the 07 Pro Bowl: 2 - Alge Crumpler and Deangelo Hall. Panthers: 3. What good players did the Falcons have that just didn't make the Pro Bowl that year? I would count Joe Horn (WAY past his prime), Warrick Dunn (at the end of his prime), John Abraham (on and off, sometimes a top 10 DE, sometimes nobody), Keith Brooking (solid LB), Lawyer Milloy (good safety, by 07 on the down slope of his career), Ovie Mughelli and Morten Anderson. They did have some young guys who weren't really good yet but are now at least kinda good: Roddy White, Tyson Clabo, Brent Grimes.

That group can't touch the talent level we have in Deangelo, Stewart, Gross, Kalil, Smitty, Beason, TD (when healthy), James Anderson, Johnson, Gamble, Godfrey not to mention our young guys could that fit the same argument as White/Clabo/Grimes: Goodson, Gettis, Lafell, Martin, maybe Fiametta, maybe Otah, maybe Schwartz judging by that recent article.

Well, that's my little tirade against Simon Wilcotts. Idiot.

IMO with the threat of a lockout and shortened season, Patrick Peterson should be the clear choice, with Dareus a close to mid second choice. If Hurney's philosophy is BPA, Peterson is the closest to a sure-fire prospect as we can get in the 1st round. Check out this article from Brian Baldinger @ nfl.com:

For all of his athleticism and star power, Cam Newton is still a project that will take 1-2 years to develop. Likewise, Blaine Gabbert is an unknown pending his his pro day workout next week and will take time to develop. We currently have no veteran QB as a potential starter/mentor for any of these young quarterbacks whether on the roster or coming via the draft. Considering these circumstance and having such a high pick, the Panthers can not afford to pass up a player that could be a potential impact player right off the bat as I believe Peterson will. The theory of not picking a top-caliber CB within the top 5 is just that - a theory and is not a good reason based on status quo. The Panthers are going to have a lot to consider before the April draft.

I usually really like Lombardy but I think he's nuts with the Gabbert thing. Newton blows him away even if you discount Newtons dual threat potential and how that will help our running game.
