drafting cam at 1 would put us in the exact same position next year

The season isn't going to rise or fall based on who we take at #1 alone. There are a lot of other factors.

We could hit a total home run on the top pick and still have season in the toilet.

With that said, it's extremely important for that choice to be the right one.

I agree, but personally think a QB can do the most to change the misfortune.

The OP felt like a really long run on sentence.

I also just hate the "let's not draft Cam bc that will give us a good shot at the #1 pick again next year, therefore Luck." Argument.

What if we do that. Get #1 again and Luck says, Fug it I'm staying again. Should we tank another season??

we get berkley or jones, who happen to be a far superior qb duo than gabbert/newton

basically this comes down to an assumption that the panthers will be drafting high in 2012 regardless of what they do, which is i think a safe assumption to make.

at that point, would you rather be in a position to go into a second year of newton or the first year of luck?

i say that aware that i always say any player with a year of nfl experience (training, eating, coaching etc) is generally a better choice, but luck is the best qb prospect in 30 years.

I really see both sides of the arguement and honestly I just want to trade back so it's not a hard decision. A 2nd round pick would be nice. But there is a huge flaw in passing on Cam for dareus...(or Fairley, whichever one the media likes at the given moment) he won't make the panthers a better team. He may make the DL better and may make the defense better but in the long run having a great DT wont get us in the playoffs and give us back to back winning seasons.

But a QB will. Cam has his issues but if he can put it together we could be competitive for the next decade or more. Petersen, Fairely, or AJ green for that matter can't do that...no chance. At least Newton gives us a chance. We have bitched about Fox being conservative for years and the second we get a chance to gamble and maybe get a huge return guys don't want to do it. Fox will take a DT...start orton and the broncos will be pretty good. But in a few yeats when The Golden Calf of Bristol is undeveloped and orton gets banged up they will look like we have in the last few years.

Sometimes it's not about being right it's about having the balls to take a chance when you might be wrong. Or we can just get lucky and get the number 1 pick again next year. It's your choice.

Was it discussed, what would happen if we have the lockout. How do the pick's work out.?

as it stands right now, the panthers would end up with about the 3rd ish pick in 2012, and the two teams ahead of them would be the rams and lions.

it's a convoluted formula involving records from the past 3 years and a bunch of other things. i can't find it so just trust me on this.

Honest question:

Where did you read/hear that? I've tried to look and was never able to find a clear answer as to whether it would be the above, or revert to this years draft order.
