FYI on the Newton Debate

I'll have a go :)

1. To me this is his biggest issue. Now as you said this is something he can work on and it's coachable. The question of course is whether he has the work ethic to do it. I think it's clear he's been working hard with his QB coach to get better though.

2. Pretty much depends on #1. Clearly he throws a great deep ball. He misses a lot of easy shorter throws because of his footwork.

3. Pretty clean fluid release to me.

4. As mentioned earlier I don't think he's ever going to be a guy who can win the game at the LOS a la Brady/Manning. But his skillset is so unique he can create extra plays with his feet and ability to extend plays. Freeman, Roethlisberger, Vick, Flacco are all guys not known for their IQ but use their arm strength and legs to be successful.

5. I have no idea on this. He seems to have a passion for the game and great leadership ability but the "posse" that surrounds him does worry me. Have to faith that Hurney has done his homework on him.

His shorter throws are actually better than his deeper throws.

Most of that has been addressed.

Footwork- Has been working on it, and is said to have improved drastically.

Accuracy and Release- His accuracy and release are far better than many give him credit for. Most of the stuff you here about his accuracy and realease is just haters being haters. His accuracy on check downs and reads under 10 yards was in the top of the country. His accuracy is far greater than any other projected first round QB as accuracy of passes 20 yards or more is leaps and bounds ahead of Gabbert's. His release is graded as above average, no concerns there.

Reading Defenses- If gives Rivera the impression that he will be a student of the game, which I assume he will be then no worries here.

Risks- I have said this before. Newtons' reward is greater than his risk. His character issues are blown way out of proportion. If I'm not mistaken the NCAA conducts investigations just like the court of law. Innocent until proven guilty. As far as the criminal allegations, they don't seem to make or break his ability so with said I am not concerned.

Conclusion- only worry of mine is the footwork.

I would wait to see his footwork in a game before saying it's improved. That's the thing about tendencies in technique, they literally take repetition after repetition before they become natural, or 'instinctive'. Until then I would be amazed if he can suddenly change his footwork in a live game, he would be worth the #1 if that were the case.

His accuracy isn't what makes him special and you really can't deny it. He is decent enough (remember don't compare him to the draft class, look at him as his own player). By NFL standards, his accuracy isn't great and good might be a stretch. I couldn't care less about his ability inside 10 yards and his accuracy over 20 isn't bad. However it's the intermediate routes which are oh so important for our offense (provided it sticks with Chuds prior expierence). How do you expect to get the TE involved if you can't hit the intermediates across the middle? Or the crossing patterns by the WRs? He is good when he can throw in front of a player down the sideline. He is good when he has a direct line to his receiver, but feeding it through the underneath coverage? Not good, and this could well be the most important distance for our offense.

His delivery is good, but bad when he improvises, that is the main issue.

Like you say here, if Rivera picks him, he thinks the guy will work hard to improve. However, right now, he is working from the beginning on this. So this will be a long journey which he may or may not ever finish.

You spoke about risks out of context to what I addressed. I said the character concerns are subjective, which they are. However I was referring to his ability to learn what he HAS to learn, considering his natural tendencies are not conducive to longevity in the league as a passer. That is my main concern. Not if he will cheat on his wonderlic, but if it's actually possible to coach out the technqiue and tendencies that simply have to be removed.

He can't respond to this, he's busy re-writing history and setting the rules for the future.

Like when he provided this deep football analysis in regards to Cam:

From what I've seen, you're not a Panther fan. You're a Newton fan, and if the Panthers don't draft him, I seriously doubt you'll stick around. You might for a week or two just so you can say "see, I'm still here" but after that you'll slip away and join whatever fanbase has Newton.

And hey, that's your right. But don't go getting all huffy about people doubting you when you haven't been here that long and you tend to stick to only one topic. When you stop filtering everything through whether it's pro-Cam or anti-Cam, then maybe people will take you more seriously.

Very football related

I don't like fake. And this dude is full of it.

I think you just have to relax a bit with the hate. Newton tends to get people all riled up. Look at the bigger picture. Honestly the Newton fan boys have caused me to say some things I regret and you just have to let it go sometimes.

It doesn't change someone's original belief or original point, it just detracts from it for a second or two.

This isn't my fight for once though

Or this football related argument:

I'll give him credit if he sticks around. I'm just not seeing it. Too Newton-centered for me to buy in right now.

Truth be told, if we don't draft Newton, I expect many a "s--t fit" to get thrown and a lot of stupid things to be said.

Good football debate.

Haha at this point as long as no one dies over the arguments about Newton it is a win for our fanbase.

Here here, the thing is some people literally don't want to know the positives or negatives behind him. Some can't accept that he has serious flaws, others that he has genuine talent.

I just wish we could open up WHY he might not be the right, or wrong player for the Panthers.

A lot will be revealed on draft day to waht coaches think of his ability to learn. In fact I think the best thing for him as a player would be to fall on draft day. That way he is going to be more determined to be the best along with being able to sit for a year.

That said, I am still unconvinced he is the right player for us.
